How the Terraria Crossover-Only Challenge Run Works

The rule set, The Constant seed setup, and the borrowed gear that carries a Master Mode world through its first bosses.

Terraria has spent years absorbing other games. Don’t Starve Together brought hunger, darkness damage, and Deerclops. Dungeon Defenders II brought the Old One’s Army and the Tavernkeep. Palworld brought a handful of pals that act as pets, mounts, and weapons. Strip out everything Terraria made for itself and what remains is a small, strange toolbox — and that toolbox is enough to start a run.

Quick answer: The run bans native Terraria equipment and allows only crossover items. You play The Constant seed on Master Mode and progress using borrowed gear like Digtoise, Foxparks, Chillet, and Old One’s Army sentries.

The crossover-only rule set

The constraint is simple to state and painful to play. Tools, weapons, accessories, and mounts have to originate from a crossover event or another game’s guest content. That removes the copper pickaxe, the wooden sword, and the entire early-game crafting ladder most players lean on.

Food gets its own wrinkle, because The Constant adds starvation. Only foods that exist on the crossover side of the ledger are fair game, so the edible list has to be checked against what Don’t Starve Together contributed rather than what Terraria cooks up on its own. Mushrooms picked up on the surface do a lot of heavy lifting early.

Blocks are the quiet exception that keeps the run playable. Snow, marble, and wood are still placed freely for platforms and bridges, and wood only becomes available once a crossover cutting tool exists.

World setup: Master Mode, Crimson, and The Constant

The character is a Classic difficulty build, dressed up as Steve from the Minecraft movie, which keeps the theme intact without adding a permadeath penalty to a run that requires repeated dying. The world is a different story: a medium Master Mode world with Crimson, named Pelican Town.

The seed choice is the load-bearing decision. The Constant raises how often Don’t Starve crossover content shows up, which is the difference between a viable run and a dead one. It also switches on the two mechanics that define the first hour, since darkness away from a light source deals damage and hunger drains steadily.

Deaths are useful here rather than just costly. Dying on the surface leaves tombstones, and tombstones are what you need to produce Abigail’s Flower, so early progress involves deliberately feeding the counter.

Mining without a pickaxe

Nothing in the crossover pool is craftable from scratch at spawn, so the opening move is transferring a Digtoise from an existing builder world into the new character’s inventory. The Palworld pal drills through tiles, which turns it into the run’s pickaxe substitute for snow, dirt, stone, and marble.

Digtoise also solves geography. Snow blocks mined in the tundra become the material for a platform at the edge of the world, and later the same blocks form a long sky bridge over the ocean. Digging straight down with it is the only way to reach the cavern layer and start pulling Life Crystals out of ice caves to raise maximum health.

Foxparks is the light source and the weapon

Foxparks arrives in captivity. Goblin archers spawn carrying a bound Loyal Foxparks, and despawning the goblins frees the pal. Farming for that spawn is what the ocean sky bridge is for, because waiting out a full night cycle up there dodges slimes and keeps the encounter pool narrow.

Once rescued, Foxparks does two jobs at once. Its flamethrower attack is the run’s primary damage source, and the flame itself lights dark tunnels well enough to blunt The Constant’s darkness damage. You know it has attached correctly when the minion follows you and the flame fires on command.

Chillet and the Huge Dragon Egg

Mobility comes out of a frozen chest in the cavern layer. A Huge Dragon Egg found there hatches into Chillet, a mount that turns flat-footed boss fights into something survivable. Paired with Foxparks, it forms the whole combat loadout for the pre-hardmode stretch — one pal moves you, the other burns things.

Sentry rods are not a drop. They are bought from the Tavernkeep with Defender Medals, which means the Old One’s Army has to be cleared more than once before the loadout fills out.

Eye of Cthulhu goes down from an elevated sky platform, with Chillet handling movement while Foxparks applies fire. The pattern repeats for the Brain of Cthulhu in the Crimson, where mobility matters more than raw damage.

Deerclops is the run’s real unlock. It is fought in an underground ice cavern in the snow biome, and Shadow Hands cause most of the deaths before the kill lands. The reward pile is what justifies the attempts, since Lucy the Axe finally gives the character a way to harvest wood.

The Old One’s Army runs on the sky bridge with the Eternia Crystal Stand placed there. Clearing through Wave 5 and destroying the Dark Mage pays out Defender Medals and the War Table, and a second Tier 1 run is what funds the sentry rod purchases.

Skeletron is where it breaks. Summoned at the Dungeon at night and fought across bare platforms with no proper arena, the skull spin phase ends the attempt twice. Preparation in between includes cutting wood with Lucy the Axe and laying a long bridge across the Underworld lava for an eventual Wall of Flesh fight, which still needs a Skeletron kill first.

That is the shape of the challenge in miniature. Everything about the run is a workaround — a mining pal instead of a pickaxe, a fire-breathing pal instead of a torch, a mount instead of wings — and the ceiling arrives the moment a fight demands a real arena and real DPS. Hardmode is the stated goal, but the crossover pool has to stretch further before the Dungeon opens.
