Becoming Illusory Friends in Aniimo is the reward for keeping a friendship active day after day. Once you and another Pathfinder reach that state, exchanging Aniimo with each other guarantees an Illusory variant for both of you.
Quick answer: Interact with a friend every day, chatting, visiting homes, and sending gifts, to build shared Affinity. Enough daily interaction turns you both into Illusory Friends, after which trading Aniimo guarantees an Illusory one for each side.

Unlock the Friends system first
You cannot add friends or raise Affinity until multiplayer is available on your account. This unlocks after you progress the story and defeat Alpha Turbo, which passes the assessment and grants the rank of I Student. Reaching that rank adds the Friends and Party icons to your menu.
With the Friends tab open, you can add players by search, system or friend recommendations, running into them face-to-face, pulling them from your current party, or opening their Profile. The Profile is also where friend interactions such as Aniimo Exchange live.

Add to Google Preferences →How Affinity works
Every friend has an Affinity level that climbs as the two of you interact. Affinity is a shared counter, so both players contribute to the same total by staying in touch. You can gain 100 Affinity per day, and reaching the top rank of Soulmate takes 4,500 Affinity, which works out to about 45 days of daily interaction.
| Level | Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | New Friend |
| 2 | Good Friend |
| 3 | Close Friend |
| 4 | Trusted Friend |
| 5 | Best Friend |
| 6 | Soulmate |
As Affinity grows, more shared features open up with that friend, including wider Aniimo Exchange tiers, rarer Companion Mode gifts, extra two-player gestures, and the Illusory Friends bond that this whole process leads toward.

Daily ways to raise Affinity
Consistency matters more than any single action. Do these each day to keep the counter moving toward the Illusory Friends threshold.
Chat every day
Chatting with one another is the easiest approach, and an emoticon also qualifies. When the exchange begins, your friend’s profile icon gains a Friendship Streak indicator in its top-left corner; it tracks the streak’s length. It remains active only when both of you chat on the same day.
Visit each other’s homes
Dropping by a friend’s Homeland raises Affinity on its own. While you are there, you can loosen and till their crops, which earns you resources for your own home and helps their crops grow faster.
Send gifts
Gifts earned through gameplay can be sent to friends. You may send any number to one friend, but the combined total sent to everyone is subject to a weekly limit.
Playing together in Companion Mode also builds Affinity, so pairing up for an expedition doubles as social progress.

What Illusory Friends unlocks
Keeping up daily interactions can turn both of you into Illusory Friends. In that state, exchanging Aniimo guarantees that each of you walks away with an Illusory Aniimo. Outside of that bond, an Illusory variant can still drop while trading, but the chance is random and tied to how strong your Friendship Bond is.
An Illusory Aniimo is a rarity type that changes how your Aniimo looks, much like a Sparkling variant. The Illusory tag does not affect stats or potential, so it is purely a cosmetic change to the creature’s appearance.
An exchanged Aniimo cannot be traded again for 30 days, so plan which creatures you swap when you go for an Illusory pairing.

How to confirm it worked
You know your friendship is active when the Friendship Streak number shows on your friend’s profile icon and keeps climbing each day you both chat. Once you have become Illusory Friends, the confirmation is in the trade itself: exchange an Aniimo with that friend and both of you receive an Illusory version, with its new look visible on the creature while its stats stay unchanged.
