Salt is one of the cheapest crafting reagents in World of Warcraft, and it is not something you farm. There is no Salt node to mine, no mob that drops it, and no gathering skill that produces it. It sits on merchant inventories in almost every populated zone in the game, with unlimited stock.

Salt is a common trade good that has been in the game since patch 1.11.1. It uses the grey dust icon, which makes it easy to miss on a crowded vendor page.

The stack size has grown over the years. It went from 20 to 200 in patch 6.0.2, then to 1,000 in patch 10.0.2, so a full stack now takes a single bag slot no matter how much curing you plan to do.
Where to buy Salt: vendor locations
More than 200 merchants sell Salt, spread across capital cities, starting zones, and expansion hubs from Elwynn Forest to the Dragon Isles. The vendor types to look for are Trade Supplies, Trade Goods, General Goods, and Leatherworking Supplies. Prices vary by a few copper depending on the merchant and your reputation with their faction.

If none of those are convenient, the odds are good that a merchant in whatever zone you are standing in already stocks it. Darkshore, Azsuna, Mulgore, Val’sharah, the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, the Cape of Stranglethorn, and Highmountain each have multiple Salt vendors, and the reagent also turns up in Shattrath City, Dazar’alor, Boralus, Stormshield, Warspear, and Thunder Totem.
Leatherworking Supplies vendors are the safest bet. Since Salt exists to cure hides, almost every leatherworking merchant in the game carries it, including Tunkk in Arathi Highlands and Joseph Moore in Undercity.
How to buy Salt from a vendor
You know the purchase worked when the Salt icon appears in your bags with the quantity you asked for and your copper total drops by the price shown. Stock never runs out, so you can buy again immediately if you undercounted.
What Salt is used for in Leatherworking
Salt exists almost entirely to cure hides into usable leather. Three curing recipes consume it, and the amounts are fixed.

Work out how many hides you need to cure before you shop, multiply accordingly, and buy in one trip. At under a silver per unit, over-buying costs almost nothing, and the 1,000 stack size means excess Salt will not eat your bag space.
Buying Salt in WoW Classic
Classic uses the same vendor-only model, but the numbers differ. Salt costs 44–56 copper there and stacks to just 20, so a large curing session means several bag slots. Roughly 78 merchants stock it, concentrated in Ironforge, Thunder Bluff, Swamp of Sorrows, and the starting zones.

Season of Discovery also has a quest with a similar name that is unrelated to this reagent. Earning Your Salt is a level 25 Alliance Paladin quest from Ursula Deline in Stormwind, and it asks for 14 Summoner’s Salt from Blackrock orcs in Redridge Mountains. Those salts are a quest item only and cannot be used for curing.
Salt Deposit is a different item
If a Dragonflight recipe is asking you for Salt Deposit, no vendor will help. That is a separate Dragon Isles material, and mining is the only way to get it. Salt Deposits drop from Serevite and Draconium Ore nodes across the Dragon Isles, including the lava fields around the Melting Knoll.
The drop is tied to your gathering stats. Opening the Dragon Isles Mining specialization window shows your Perception value, and spending Dragon Isles Mining Knowledge to raise it increases how often nodes hand you a Salt Deposit.
From there it is a straightforward farming loop. Fly a circuit through ore-dense areas such as The Waking Shores and the Erupting Cavern, mine every Serevite and Draconium node you pass, and watch your loot window for the Salt Deposit line.
For everything else, the plain trade-goods Salt stays the simplest reagent in the game to acquire. One trip to a trade or leatherworking merchant, a few silver, and you are stocked for a long stretch of hide curing.
