A maze of thorns sits in the eastern part of Rosetower Woods, and the Budsquires guarding it do not speak a language you understand. That is the whole trick behind Flowers and Thorns – Rosetower Wood: the fights are short, but nothing progresses until you have a Budsquire family Aniimo on your team and Twine with it.

Quick answer: Catch a Budsquire, Twine with it to talk to the maze residents, defeat the First Lethal Thorn, then gather the courtyard clues and report back to Princess Melloblum to close the Overprotection objective.

Before you enter the Maze of Thorns

This is the second section of the Flowers and Thorns Journey, and it only appears once the earlier chapter is finished. Sort these out first, because two of them will stop you cold inside the maze.

  • Finish Flowers and Thorns – Sea of Flowers, including its closing dialogue with Aria.
  • Bring a Fire-element Aniimo to burn the thorny vines blocking the Budsquire area.
  • Keep a spare team slot free for the Budsquire you are about to catch.
  • Set a combat roster you are happy with before you speak to the guard at the entrance.

Flameruff is the usual Fire pick at this point in the game. Its evolution, Scorchhowl, carries the same element and a full Fire kit, including Fire Bolt and Burn Breaker, if you already have one.

Flowers and Thorns – Rosetower Wood: Full walkthrough

Open the Log, select Flowers and Thorns – Rosetower Wood, and track it. Fast travel to Whiterose Tower, which drops you on the ridge above the maze in Rosetower Woods.

Glide down into the Maze of Thorns. Patrolling Thornblades guard the place, and getting spotted pushes you back into a quiet corner rather than starting a fight.

Find the wall of thorny vines near the maze and burn it down with your Fire Aniimo. Inside are wild Budsquires. Beat one down and catch it.
Twine with the Budsquire. Without it, every line from the Crying Budsquire and the Thornblades comes through as noise you cannot read. With it, the conversations open up and the quest target updates.

Thornblade is the evolved form of Budsquire, which is why the maze’s guards outclass the little ones you just caught. They are Grass-element with a defensive kit built around Thorny Defense.

Use the marker to reach the guarded entrance, then speak with the First Lethal Thorn. She says your name is absent from the princess’s tea-party guest list before attacking.

Win the fight. The First Lethal Thorn is a Grass-element Thornblade, so Fire damage breaks her shield fastest. The dialogue picks straight back up after the win.

Head into the inner garden and Twine with your Budsquire again to talk to Princess Melloblum. She explains that her Dance of Blissful Bloom, the gift that spreads joy across the woods, has faded. Your objective changes to finding out why she can no longer dance.
Search the courtyard and the ruins overhead. Speak with the Patrolling Thornblade and the Crying Budsquire, glide to the rooftop to find the Bedraggled Budsquire and the Thinking Budsquire, then cross over to the Elderly Thornblade for the final clue. One Budsquire says that too many questions got it sent away and that it had seen the princess upset.

Climb the perimeter wall, glide back into the main courtyard, and report everything to Melloblum. The answer is that the clan’s protection has become a cage, the First Lethal Thorn apologizes, exhausted Budsquires arrive looking for home, and the dance returns.

Do not wander off to collect a Maze of Thorns tale while the main investigation is still active. The four tales are marked Optional in the tracker and only add story context, so follow the tracked Melloblum target to advance.

How to confirm the quest is complete

Two things tell you it worked. Catching your Budsquire pops a “Budsquire Special Form collection progress increased, Collaboration Ability Level +1” message, which confirms the family Aniimo is registered. Finishing the report to Melloblum triggers the Overprotection completion screen.

That screen is not the finish line on its own. Go back to the Log and make sure the Journey hand-in for Flowers and Thorns – Rosetower Wood is submitted. A ticked objective with an outstanding hand-in still counts as unfinished for anything that checks this quest.

Flowers and Thorns: Rosetower Wood – Sightseeing

The restored dance changes the woods, and a short follow-up Journey asks you to go look. Pick it up in Rosetower Woods after the main section closes.

  • See the changes that have taken place throughout Rosetower Woods.
  • Bind with a Budsquire, then strike a Cubbo’s rose to obtain a Stamen of Cubbo’s Rose.
  • Find the white flowers spread across the wilderness.
  • Reach the summit of Whiterose Tower, where the Whitesnow Rose grows.

Completing this sightseeing entry does not stand in for the main section. It is tracked separately, so do not treat it as proof the Rosetower Wood hand-in is done.

What the completed quest unlocks for Melloblum

The Rosetower Wood hand-in is the story gate on evolving a Budsquire into Melloblum. Finishing it does not perform the evolution, and the game checks the submitted quest rather than your progress through it.

Melloblum

  • Completed Flowers and Thorns – Rosetower Wood hand-in on your account.
  • A Budsquire at level 27.
  • Faithful in that same Budsquire’s personality, not a teammate’s.
  • Basic Budsquire evolves into Melloblum with 1 Sprout Stone plus 1 Stamen of Cubbo’s Rose.

A Flux Crystal can stand in for a missing Sprout Stone, but nothing substitutes for the Stamen of Cubbo’s Rose. That comes from the sightseeing step, so run it before you open the evolution screen.

Awen’s perfume is a separate hand-in

A Fragrant Journey: Rosetower Woods runs in the same wood and is easy to confuse with the maze story. The perfumer Awen is found during the day, and her branch wants a Whitesnow Rose Aromathyst, which means Twining with a Dewy, gathering nectar at the top of Whiterose Tower, and brewing it at a Dewy nest.

Clearing the maze does nothing for that perfume, and the two hand-ins never overlap. Finish the Melloblum investigation first, bank the Stamen of Cubbo’s Rose from the sightseeing run, and treat Awen’s workshop as a fresh errand when you are ready for it.
