The earliest proper lock in Silent Hill: Townfall appears on a red wooden hotel-room door. Its circular device consists of three rings nested inside one another, with one date element assigned to each ring. The room provides no hint on the screen, and an incorrect entry produces no response whatsoever: there is no partial click or error, only rings that continue turning.
Quick answer: Arrange the rings as 18 – JANUARY – 1996, beginning with the upper ring and moving inward. Once the date is aligned, the lock opens automatically.
| Ring | Position | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Outer | 18 |
| Middle | Middle | JANUARY |
| Bottom | Inner | 1996 |
Where the locked door is in the Haldane Hotel
This puzzle appears near the start, immediately after the phone booth in Town Square, within St. Amelia’s Coastal District. Dialing 100 there sends you to a guest room in The Haldane Hotel. A desk in the room contains the Room Service Card; turn away from it and the locked door will be behind you. That door opens into the bathroom.
Everything here is first-person, so the lock is flagged by the small white reticle in the middle of the screen. Look at the wheel and you get a Use prompt, which zooms the camera onto the mechanism and makes the rings selectable.

Two of the values live in a recording on your CRTV, and the third is printed on paper in the room. You do not have to hunt them down to use the date above, but the lock is built around them.
The number 18
Hold the CRTV, tune to the second yellow signal, then store it and play the recording. The number 18 appears near the start of the footage, and that is the day value for the outer ring.
The month January
Keep watching the same recording. One shot shows a calendar with a pencil resting on January. Months are spelled out on the middle ring rather than numbered, so there is no risk of mixing it up with the day.
The year
The last value is on the desk, not on the CRTV. Examine the Room Service Card and look for the year attached to the menu. On Normal difficulty that reads 1996, the same year the story takes place in, which makes it easy to skim past on the inner ring. Other playthroughs have shown different years in that slot, so if 1996 does nothing, read the memo in your own game and use the year printed there.

Documents you have already picked up stay readable from the Clues tab, so you can re-check the Room Service Card without walking back to the desk.
How to enter 18 January 1996 on the lock

On a controller the close-up view maps to a small set of inputs:
- Left stick — select which ring you are adjusting
- Right stick — turn the selected ring
- Cross — interact and confirm
- L2 / R2 — zoom the camera in and out
- Circle — exit the puzzle view
How to tell the door actually unlocked
The mechanism has neither a confirmation control nor a success notice. When all three rings are correctly aligned, you hear a click and the lock releases without further input, followed by a brief release cutscene. Since that sound is the sole confirmation, rely on listening rather than the display.
If the handle still shows nothing usable after you back out, one of the three values is wrong. Re-enter the date from the top ring inward and double-check the year on the inner ring, since that is the value most people misread.
A sudden sound marks the doorway opening into a dark bathroom. A handwritten note lies beside the sink, and the nearby counter has the Room 204 Key with a Haldane Hotel keychain. Take this key to the room’s main exit door to leave the hotel and continue the story.
