Tiredness in Graveyard Keeper 2 is a separate status from running out of energy, and mixing the two up is what leaves Keepers standing around eating pies while their insanity quietly climbs. The game does tell you when you are tired. It just does it with a small icon most players walk right past.
Quick answer: You are tired when a blue circle with a “Zz” appears at the top center of the screen. It shows up after roughly two in-game days without sleeping, not when your energy bar empties.
The Lack of sleep icon: where to look on the HUD
The tired state is shown by a blue bubble with sleeping “Z” marks, sitting at the top center of the screen rather than with your other meters in the corner. It plays a short sound when it first appears, which is often the only thing that catches your attention mid-task.

Move the cursor onto the icon to open its tooltip. It identifies the status as Lack of sleep and explains that working before you sleep consumes extra energy while making insanity rise faster.

Add to Google Preferences →Why an empty energy bar does not mean you are tired
Energy is the bar in the upper-left of the interface, and it drains from every action you take: gathering, chopping, mining, crafting at a bench, digging, and morgue work. Hitting zero stops you from doing anything until you eat or rest, but it does not apply the tired status by itself.

The trigger is time awake. Keep feeding yourself and keep working, and you can push through a full day cycle without ever seeing the icon. Around the two-day mark without sleep, the status lands regardless of how full your energy is. That is why players who live off food alone are often surprised by how long it takes to arrive.
What the tired debuff does while it is active
- Every action costs more energy than it normally would.
- Insanity builds up faster from the work you do, including morgue tasks and crafting.
- Rising insanity shrinks your usable energy pool, so food restores less than it appears to.
Grinding through a long work session with the icon active can leave you with more insanity than you started with, even after a full night’s sleep clears the status.
How to clear the tired status and confirm it worked
[E] Enter prompt to go inside.[E] Sleep prompt appears, then interact with it. Sleep is the only thing that removes the Lack of sleep status — food, beer and pies do not touch it.

Two details catch people out here. Sleeping while you are not tired refills energy but leaves insanity untouched, which is why some players conclude that sleep does nothing for it. And the insanity removed by sleeping is a fixed amount, so if half your bar has turned over to insanity, expect some of it to still be there in the morning. Badly built-up cases can take more than one night.
If you are not ready to go to bed yet
You cannot postpone the debuff itself, but you can keep insanity under control while you wrap up a job. Two consumables do the work.
| Method | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Berry Pie | 4 dough + 6 berries (bakes 4) | -3 insanity, +30 energy each |
| Beer | Bought from the tavern keeper | Removes a modest amount of insanity, no energy |
| Sleeping while tired | A night in bed | Clears the status, removes a set amount of insanity |
Berry Pies are the practical answer once your kitchen is running. You need wheat milled into flour and turned into dough, berries from the bushes near the house and around the village, and firewood loaded as fuel for the oven. Because each pie also restores energy, a stocked larder lets you work long stretches without the insanity meter ever becoming a problem.
Eating pies to offset insanity while the tired icon is up is a losing trade. The debuff inflates insanity gain per task fast enough that you will spend more food than you save, so it is cheaper to finish the job and sleep.
The habit worth building is simple. Treat the blue Zz bubble as a hard stop rather than a suggestion, sleep the moment it appears, and use pies or beer to handle insanity during the rest of the day. Done that way, tiredness stops being a mystery timer and becomes just another part of the daily loop.
