Flax Thread is the first real textile material in Graveyard Keeper 2, and it sits behind two gates: a Farming technology you have to research, and a crop you have to grow or buy. Once both are handled, the Spinning Wheel turns raw Flax into thread on demand.
Quick answer: Research Flax Thread (45 green tech points) in the Farming tree, build the Spinning Wheel, then spin harvested Flax into thread. Flax comes from a Flax Bed or the Tailor.

Research the Flax Thread technology in the Farming tree
Open the Tech Tree and switch to the Farming tab. The Flax Thread node sits in the Sewing branch and costs 45 green tech points, with no red or blue points required. You cannot buy it until Garden Improvement I is already researched, so budget 75 green points total if you are starting from scratch.
Buying the node does two things at once. It adds the Flax Thread recipe and it hands you the blueprint for the Spinning Wheel building. Studying spare Flax at the Study Table is a reasonable way to pay for it, since each Flax returns +10 red and +20 green tech points for 2 Science.
Build the Spinning Wheel in your yard
With the blueprint unlocked, open the building menu in the Yard and place the Spinning Wheel. It is cheap by mid-game standards, but the nails are the usual bottleneck.

Buy Flax Seed from Herm in the village
Herm’s Store stocks Flax Seed, but the entry is locked until you hit Mastery Level 5 in the gardening skill. Until then the seed shows in the trade menu with the requirement listed and you cannot purchase it, so push farming mastery before making the trip.
Plant a Flax Bed in the garden
Take the seeds to a garden bed, open the planting menu, select Flax Seeds and confirm. A Flax Bed consumes 4 Flax Seed and grows on its own with no watering input from you.

Harvest amounts vary with the bed tier. The Farmer and Farmer II perks each add +1 Flax to a harvest, and Seed Master adds +1 to the seed return, which is what makes the crop self-sustaining instead of a repeat purchase.
Buy Flax directly from the Tailor
The Tailor sells finished Flax from the start of the game at 7 bronze at usual stock, with stock capacity rising as the trader levels up. That is the fastest way to get a handful of thread going before your garden is running, and the Tailor also buys Flax back at 5 bronze if you end up overproducing.
Spin Flax into Flax Thread
What Flax Thread is used for
Thread is an intermediate material, and its main job is Fabric. The Weaving Loom converts 4 Flax Thread into 1 Fabric over 4 ticks at 1 energy per tick, requires Farming mastery 5, and pays out +2 green tech points per craft. The Tailor perk doubles that output to 2 Fabric per craft. Building the loom takes 4x Wooden Plank, 2x Polished Bronze and 8x Bronze Nails.
There is a second, thread-free route to the same material. Assembly bench I can make Fabric from 16 Flax directly, but it needs Building mastery 4, the Fabric (Building) technology, and the Assembly bench: Spinning wheel upgrade installed on the station. It takes 8 ticks at 2 energy per tick, so it is an automation play rather than a faster one.
Beyond Fabric, raw Flax also feeds Carpet at the Sewing Table (12 Flax), Paper glop at the Formulation Bench (12 Flax), and Supply: Fabric at Assembly bench I (16 Flax). Fabric itself goes on to Supply: Clothes I and II, Supply: Flour Sack, and armor crafting, which is why a single Flax Bed rotation is worth keeping running permanently rather than planting it once.
The natural next node in the tree is Fabric at 60 green tech points, and there is no reason to delay it once the Spinning Wheel is placed. Thread on its own sells for very little, but the moment you can weave it, the same Flax patch starts covering supply orders and trader Likes at the same time.
