Ronova, the Ruler of Death, does not lose the first fight. She dislodges your life, kills you, and drops you into the Afterlife — and that is the scripted outcome, not a skill check you failed. The rematch is the one that counts, and it only works because Pierro brings a device the Fatui built specifically to hurt gods.
Quick answer: Chip Ronova to roughly 80% HP, let her kill you, escape the Afterlife by following the Seal of Life, then fight her stripped of her Authority and unleash Pierro’s Eye of the Fatui.

Where the Ronova battle sits in Chapter 7 Act 4
The fight belongs to Black Feathers Scattered at Parting, the third subquest of A Rekviem for the Underworld, which arrived with Version 7.1 on September 23, 2026. You unlock it by finishing the previous subquest, Etched in Time.
The act itself starts much earlier and much quieter, with a Mora coin flipped across a table at Podvorye Restaurant and a scuffle that someone else has to break up.
From there the crystal doors open onto the Cryo Archon’s court, with the Harbingers assembled and the Tsaritsa on her throne.
A winged golden automaton goes for the seals, Pantalone deploys turrets, and Vesna borrows ancestral power from the hall’s energy orbs to bring it down.
The act then pauses for an illustrated Khaenri’ah flashback, which matters here for one reason: it establishes Pierro as Eftirvit, the scholar who watched Hroptatyr’s Crimson Moon research fail. Dainsleif calls him by that name mid-battle later on.
The flashback ends in a rainstorm at Professor Mimameith’s grave, with one scholar staying and the other walking away.
Back in the present, you attend Sandrone’s tea party alongside Arlecchino, rest at Podvorye Restaurant, then travel to Rankova Zorya to meet Mitya. Dainsleif turns up on the way. Ronova turns up uninvited.
What the Eye of the Fatui is, and what it costs Pierro
The Eye of the Fatui is a star-shaped violet construct the Fatui built for exactly one purpose: attacking gods. Pierro admits it has never been tested in live combat and says only that it was finished in time. Once active, it channels Abyssal and celestial energy into enormous crystalline lances that punch through a divine barrier — the thing that makes Ronova reachable in the first place.
Ronova’s objection is that no mortal body or mind can hold that power, and she is not wrong. Pierro acknowledges that even his Curse of Immortality does not make him a safe vessel, then fires anyway.
For the right to gaze upon the gods, whatever the price may be, whatever I must suffer, so be it!
The device is one-use in practice. It burns out during the final exchange and shatters on the snow, with Pierro collapsing beside it.

Phase 1: Reclaim your Life before she kills you
Escaping the Afterlife
Ronova kills you regardless, and the quest continues in the Afterlife. The Seal of Life leads the way out, so follow it rather than looking for your own route. At each obstacle, stop and wait — the Seal builds the solution for you, and the path only opens once it has.
The Gnosis interlude between the phases
Before the rematch, the quest cuts to a conversation between Rhinedottir and the Tsaritsa that explains why the second fight is winnable at all. The six Gnoses the Tsaritsa collected push Cryo energy far enough to affect the bounds of Reason — not enough to freeze space and time outright, but enough to slow the flow of time in that one place.
Phase 2: Fight as Pierro and fire the Eye of the Fatui
The finishing blow, the Celestial Nail, and Ronova’s fate
The kill is a two-part move. Pierro drives the energy lance straight into Ronova’s barrier and holds it there, and Lumine charges through the opening with the decisive slash. The Eye of the Fatui shatters immediately afterward, and the red vortex over the battlefield is cleared with golden Geo power.
Ronova does not drop where she stands. She falls into a crimson rift and exits through a portal above the clouds beside a divine pillar, bleeding from the mouth and registering, for the first time, what dying feels like. She touches the pillar, cracks its stone, scatters black feathers, and calls this her parting gift before fading.
Then comes the dialogue with Paimon and Dainsleif, and the cutscene of Ronova unleashing the Celestial Nail over Snezhnaya. The quest completes once that cutscene ends, paying out 30 Primogems, 11 Mystic Enhancement Ore, 71,450 Mora, five Hero’s Wit, and one Memory of Piercing Frost.
Defeated is not the same as dead. When Dainsleif asks whether the final attack actually killed her, Pierro allows that she may have slipped off the battlefield unseen — while arguing that the damage would be severe and irreversible either way, and warning against ruling out revenge.
That ambiguity is deliberate. The Ruler of Death is beaten, her Authority is gone, the weapon that did it no longer exists, and the pillar she cracked on her way out is a problem the story has clearly not finished with.
