Veiled Charybdis is an Apex fish that lives in the Obsidian Trench deep inside Mariana’s Veil. It does not behave like a normal catch. Hooking it starts a boss-style reeling encounter with a hazard meter, shifting portals, and whirlpools, so landing it depends on managing those hazards rather than just holding progress.
Quick answer: Fish the Obsidian Trench rivers at night with Meteor or Stag Beetle bait, then survive the reel by keeping the hazard meter low and dodging whirlpools until the bar hits MAX!.
Veiled Charybdis catch requirements
The spawn conditions are strict but simple. You only need the right bait and the night cycle, and weather or season never matter.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Rarity | Apex (chance rises with Luck) |
| Location | Obsidian Trench, Mariana’s Veil |
| Time | Night |
| Weather / Season | None required |
| Bait | Meteor or Stag Beetle |

Because the reel is a fight, your setup matters more than raw progress speed. The fish carries an Extreme Resilience penalty of -70 and a locked -95% Progress Speed, so control and staying power win the encounter.
- High Luck to make the Apex appear more often
- High Resilience to survive the long reel
- Good control for steering around hazards
- Piercing or Slash
- Meteor or Stag Beetle bait equipped
Veiled Charybdis cannot be caught with the Tranquility Rod or Bellona’s Waraxe, so pick a different rod before you start.

You cannot drop straight into the trench and start fishing. The area sits behind the full Mariana’s Veil progression, which begins at Roslit Bay by speaking with Vaelor about the glowing mineral veins across the five layers.
A descendant in every layer has a mutation quest to complete. Once you have cleared all five, descend to Crevice Wall, solve the riddle active there, and activate the layer gems; this unlocks Abyss Gate, which gives you access to Obsidian Trench.
Inside the trench, a debuff called Trench Suppression builds while you stay in the area. Interact with the glowing white crystals to lower it, and top up before starting a long Charybdis reel so a high suppression level does not make the fight harder.
Hook Veiled Charybdis in the trench rivers

Beat the Charybdis reeling minigame
Instead of the standard bar, the hook triggers a boss reel. Around the 25% mark the fish shifts into its second phase, which slows normal progress and adds a heavy True Progress Speed penalty. Your job is to fill the catch bar to MAX! while keeping the hazards under control.
- Keep the hazard meter (the purple bar) low; if it fills completely, Charybdis pulls you under and eats you, failing the catch.
- Stay away from the blue portals, which shrink your control bar when they spawn.
- React the instant a whirlpool starts forming, since it strips rod control and is hard to recover from.
Treat the encounter as damage control rather than a race. Hold your control point steady, move around the portals and whirlpools as they appear, and let the progress bar climb between hazards until it reaches MAX!.
Confirm the catch
Once the bar fills to MAX!, the fish is landed and registers in the Obsidian Trench Bestiary. Open the Bestiary to see Veiled Charybdis marked as caught along with your heaviest recorded weight.

Do not be surprised by the enormous weight numbers. This fish starts at a minimum of 1,000,000kg and can reach up to 8,400,000kg without external boosts, so million-kilogram catches are normal.
Catch enough to awaken Skolopendra
Landing Veiled Charybdis repeatedly does more than fill the Bestiary. Catching it roughly four to six times turns the ambient trench crystals deep red, and the fifth catch is a common trigger point.

When the crystals glow red, the message “The Skolopendra rises from the Obsidian Trench!” appears, and the Exotic Skolopendra encounter becomes available. That catch prefers Kraken Tentacle bait during Rain or Foggy weather, and finishing it can complete the trench Bestiary.

So the loop is straightforward once the trench is open. Fish the rivers at night with Meteor or Stag Beetle bait, win the reel by keeping the hazard meter down and dodging the portals and whirlpools, and repeat until the crystals turn red and Skolopendra rises.
