Magma is a hatch-category mutation in Ride a Pet that multiplies a pet’s speed, cash per second, and sale value by ten. Unlike the weather mutations that fall from storms, Magma is applied by taking an egg to the volcano and dropping it straight into the crater lava. It is a gamble with a fixed success rate, and every egg only gets one shot at it.
Quick answer: Take any egg you can drop to the volcano’s highest rim, then release it into the crater lava. There is a 15% chance it becomes Magma (x10 multiplier). Each egg gets one attempt.
Magma mutation stats and rules
Magma sits in the hatch category alongside Gold, Diamond, and Rainbow, which means it does not stack with a weather trait such as Rage or Void. The success roll is fixed, so no positioning or timing improves the odds.

A successful roll adds bonus seconds to the egg’s break timer, giving you extra time to carry it home. A demonstrated run showed a “+12s” bonus on success, while a failed attempt trims several seconds off the timer instead. Because the timer keeps ticking the whole time, a failure can leave you racing home with very little margin.
Get an egg from the volcano cave
You can attempt Magma with any egg you are able to pick up and drop, but the volcano cave also hands out a Volcanic Egg near the dragon’s lair. The cave has a strict layout, so learn the route before your timer starts.
The dragon becomes “THE GUARDIAN HAS AWOKEN” once you take the egg, so plan your escape route before you grab it rather than after.
Trigger the Magma mutation at the crater
Instead of heading to your ranch, fly to the very top of the volcano and hover over the crater. The mutation only happens at the summit lava pool.
If the roll fails you get “Your Volcanic Egg Didn’t Mutate” and lose time from the break timer. The egg stays in your hand, but do not drop it in again — a second attempt on the same egg will never mutate it.
You cannot fly off early to get a head start while the egg is mutating. Leaving the volcano’s area shows “You Flew Too Far From The Volcano – Mutation Cancelled” and speeds up the timer, so stay put until the result appears.
Carry the egg home before it breaks
Once the egg is in your hand you are racing the “Egg Will Break” timer back to your ranch pen. A slow mount will leave the egg breaking before you arrive, even after a successful mutation, so movement speed matters more than anything here.
- Use a fast flying mount such as a Phoenix to get up and down the volcano quickly.
- Switch to a high-speed ground mount like a Komodo Dragon or Cerberus for the overland run to your ranch.
- Head straight for the house icon marking your ranch and drop the egg into your plot.
How to confirm the mutation worked
You know the attempt succeeded the moment the crater shows the Magma mutation message and the egg picks up bonus time. The result is locked in once you place the egg inside your ranch plot with time still on the clock. When it hatches, the pet carries the [Magma] tag and the full x10 boost to speed, earnings, and sale value.
