Southsea Freebooters Walkthrough in World of Warcraft Classic

Where to find the pirate camp south of Ratchet, the exact kill counts, and how to turn the quest in.

Where to find the pirate camp south of Ratchet, the exact kill counts, and how to turn the quest in.

Southsea Freebooters is an early Barrens kill quest handed out in the goblin port of Ratchet. It sends you south along the coast to clear out a pirate camp, then back to town to collect your reward. The task is short, but the two enemy types and their exact counts trip up players who assume any pirate will do.

Quick answer: Kill 12 Southsea Brigands and 6 Southsea Cannoneers at the pirate camp south of Ratchet along The Merchant Coast, then return to the quest giver in Ratchet to hand it in.

Quest details and objectives

The quest starts and ends with the same NPC in Ratchet, in The Barrens on Kalimdor. It is the first step in a short chain that continues into The Missing Shipment and later Stolen Booty. You only need to kill two specific pirate types, and other mobs in the area do not count toward the objective.

In current retail World of Warcraft this quest was reworked and now asks you to kill 8 pirates on Fray Island for Wharfmaster Dizzywig instead. The 12-and-6 version described here is the Classic layout.

Pick up the quest in Ratchet

Talk to Gazlowe inside his building in Ratchet, near coordinates 62.66, 36.27. Accept Southsea Freebooters. The quest tracker will show 0/12 Southsea Brigand slain and 0/6 Southsea Cannoneer slain.
Open your map of The Barrens. The objective area is marked in blue along the coast to the south of Ratchet, on The Merchant Coast. This is your travel target.

Travel to the pirate camp south of Ratchet

Leave Gazlowe’s tower and head to the southern part of Ratchet. A dirt path leading southeast starts right next to the inn, near the Broken Keel Tavern. Follow it and stay along the shoreline.
Continue along The Merchant Coast until you reach the pirate encampment, roughly around coordinates 63, 43-45. You will see palm trees, tents, and a ship, all filled with Southsea Brigands and Southsea Cannoneers.

Clear 12 Brigands and 6 Cannoneers

Work through the camp and kill both pirate types until the tracker reads 12/12 Southsea Brigand and 6/6 Southsea Cannoneer. Yellow objective text pops above each pirate as it dies, so you can watch the counts climb.

Pull enemies one at a time where you can. Cannoneers do not chase you; they stand in place and fire ranged shots, so approaching them can drag in nearby Brigands. At low level, waiting until level 12 or 13 makes the fights far safer.

A rare mob named Tazan can spawn at the first campsite. Do not stand around idle there unless you are watching for it.

Return to Ratchet and turn in the quest

Once the tracker shows both objectives complete, open the map to confirm Southsea Freebooters is marked done, then run north along the shoreline back into Ratchet.
Head up the wooden entry ramp and stairs to Gazlowe’s upper room. Hand in the quest to receive your copper and experience. You will then be offered the follow-up, The Missing Shipment.

You know it worked when the completion dialogue closes, your experience bar jumps, and the next quest in the chain appears on Gazlowe. Completing it grants 740 experience (1,035 in Season of Mastery) and 75 reputation with Ratchet, and it counts toward Loremaster of Kalimdor.
