The Forge of Potential is a world-built altar in the Mountains that pushes gear past the quality ceiling a Workbench or Forge can reach. It runs on Idols, which you loot from chests rather than craft, and every attempt is a gamble: the item either climbs a quality level or breaks apart into raw materials.
Quick answer: Take a matching idol and the item to a Forge of Potential in the Mountains and press Attempt Refinement. Each try adds one quality level at 65% odds, or destroys the item.
What to bring before the climb
Refinement needs a matching idol and the item you want to upgrade, nothing more. No coins and no extra crafting materials go into an attempt. Idols come in two families and eight material tiers, and the game checks both the family and the tier against the item before it will let you refine.
- Battle Idols refine weapons and tools.
- Protection Idols refine armor, capes, helmets and shields.
- The tier must match the item’s assigned refinement tier, which is not always obvious from its name.
- One idol is spent per attempt, whether it succeeds or fails.
Because the altar sits in the Mountain biome, you also need cold protection. Without it the Freezing effect drains health every tick and cuts stamina regeneration to 0.4x. A Wolf Fur Cape is enough on its own, and it is crafted at a Workbench level 2 from Wolf Pelt x6, Silver x4 and Wolf Trophy x1. Frost Resistance Mead or a line of campfires works as a fallback while you search.

The Forge of Potential is a ring of carved stone heads around a small altar, set out in the open on a snowy rise in the Mountains, usually near a summit rather than down at the biome edge. A world holds up to 10 of them, each at least 400 meters apart. You cannot build anything within 22 meters of one, and you cannot pick one up and carry it home.
Once you get close, an idol-shaped icon drops onto your map and stays there, so the climb only has to happen once. If you are playing a world made before this feature arrived, head for Mountain peaks you have never loaded before, since the altar only generates in fresh terrain.
Build a portal near the altar and link it to your base. The Forge cannot be moved, so repeat visits mean ferrying idols and spare gear back and forth.
How to refine an item

The odds and the cost of a break
All idols work by the same rule, no matter their tier. Each attempt has a 65% chance of raising quality by one level; the other 35% destroys the item. Streaks receive no protection, making five upgrades in a row roughly a 12 percent chance.
When an item breaks, it is dismantled back into materials. You get back 35% of its crafting cost plus the cost of its last upgrade step, rounded up for each ingredient, and the idol is gone. A quality 1 Stone Axe built from Wood x5 and Stone x4 returns Wood x4 and Stone x3 on a break, so cheap gear loses almost nothing besides the idol. A heavily upgraded weapon is a different story, and a failed attempt can also take a bite out of your health, so top off before you refine.
Never bring your only copy of an irreplaceable weapon up the mountain. If the attempt fails, you come back down without it.
How far refinement pushes a Stone Axe
Quality 4 is the usual Workbench limit for a Stone Axe. The Forge lets you take it past that cap, granting 30 durability, 5 slash, and 5 block force per level. Its weight, stamina use, parry bonus, knockback, and backstab remain unchanged, and it can still be repaired at a level 1 station after refinement.

| Quality | Durability | Slash | Block force |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | 15 | 20 |
| 2 | 130 | 20 | 25 |
| 3 | 160 | 25 | 30 |
| 4 (Workbench max) | 190 | 30 | 35 |
| 5 | 220 | 35 | 40 |
| 6 | 250 | 40 | 45 |
| 7 (preview) | 280 | 45 | 50 |
Quality 2 through 4 can be reached either by spending stone at the Workbench or by refining, so the Forge can stand in for an ordinary upgrade when you have spare idols. Levels 5 and up exist only through refinement. The same pattern holds for other gear. Krom, for example, has been refined up to quality 10 with Black Metal Battle Idols at a steady +50 durability, +6 slash and +10 block force per level, with its block armor staying put.
Matching an idol to your gear
There are 16 idols in all, one Battle Idol and one Protection Idol for each of eight material tiers. The tier roughly tracks biome progression, with lower tiers in earlier regions and the strongest ones in the final biomes. As a rule, gear made from a biome’s unique resource wants an idol of that same material, though there are exceptions, so always trust the requirement shown at the altar over the item’s look.
| Idol tier | Chest biomes | Example gear it refines |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Meadows | Stone Axe, Club, Leather Tunic, Wood Shield |
| Meadows, Black Forest, Troll Cave, Burial Chambers | Bronze Atgeir, Bronze Plate armor, Bronze Helmet | |
| Black Forest, Swamp, Sunken Crypts | Iron Atgeir, Battleaxe, Root Harnesk, Root Leggings | |
| Swamp, Mountain, Frost Caves | Silver Sword, Fenris Coat, Fenris Leggings, Wolf Fur Cape | |
| Mountain, Plains, Sealed Tower | Black Metal Axe, Skoll and Hati, Padded Cuirass, Lox Cape | |
| Plains, Infested Mine, Putrid Hole, Charred | Arbalest, Demolisher, Carapace Breastplate, Eitr-weave Robe | |
| Dvergr tower, Charred, Jotun’s, Ancient, Deep North | Berserkir Axes, Ash Fang, Flametal Breastplate, Ashen Cape | |
| Jotun’s, Ancient, Deep North, Deep North shipwreck | Thunderblood weapons, Nord Bow, Breastplate of the Protector |
If an item is missing from the Upgrade list, the idol you are holding is the wrong family or tier, not a bug. Keep Black Metal and Black Marble separate when you sort your stash, since they are distinct tiers that are easy to mix up, and store idols by material so the right one is on hand when you finally pick a weapon worth gambling on.
