Essence Extraction is the gathering skill in AION 2, and it stops dead the moment you hit Novice Lv. 50. The bar fills, the game marks it as Max, and you stop earning skill points. To keep leveling and raise your skills past the Novice limits, you need to pass a short upgrade quest that promotes you to Professional.
Quick answer: Raise Essence Extraction to Novice Lv. 50, accept the quest “[Upgrade] Essence Extraction Specialty Skill” from Korius (Elyos) or Alzirr (Asmodian), extract one Splendent Ruby from any Ruby node, then hand it back in.
Reach Essence Extraction Novice Lv. 50 first
The upgrade is locked behind the Novice cap. You raise your gathering level by extracting essence from resource nodes you pass while questing, which is completely separate from your character level. Ore, gem, log, herb, cooking ingredient, and Odyle nodes all count toward the same Essence Extraction level.
To speed this up, gather everything along your route and spend your Common Skill Points on Proficient Handling, Delicate Touch, and Lady Luck as soon as you earn them. Those three raise your success rate on every node type, so your attempts fail less often.

Once you reach Novice Lv. 50, the quest “[Upgrade] Essence Extraction Specialty Skill” is accepted automatically and appears in your quest tracker. You can confirm the cap by opening the Essence Extraction screen from the main menu, where the level reads Novice Lv. 50 with a Max tag.

Add to Google Preferences →Talk to the Artisan Essence Extractor for your faction
The quest sends you to the Artisan Essence Extractor, and the NPC differs by faction. The recommended level listed is 45, but your character level does not affect whether you can accept the quest or extract the stone.
| Faction | NPC | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Elyos | Dawn Legion Base, Verteron | |
| Asmodian | Graverobber Campsite area, Altgard |
Speak to the NPC to begin the Specialty Upgrade Test. Korius frames it plainly in his opening lines: extract essence from a Ruby without damaging it and bring back a Splendent Ruby, and he will acknowledge your skill.

Extract a Splendent Ruby from any Ruby node
The only objective is to obtain one Splendent Ruby (Bound). You do not craft it or hunt a special node. It drops while you extract essence from ordinary Ruby deposits, so keep gathering Rubies until you get one.
Do not confuse the Splendent Ruby with the Radiant Ruby Gemstone. The Radiant Ruby Gemstone is a Jewelcrafting material made by converting Radiant Odyle, and it does not count for this quest.
Ruby node locations by faction
Elyos (Verteron): Ruby deposits sit along the outer edges of the Verteron Fortress Ruins boundary wall, southeast of the Dawn Legion Base. Verteron holds 196 Ruby spots in total. Some grow among hostile mobs, so use the Fly skill to drop onto a node and stay out of aggro range.
Asmodian (Altgard): Ruby deposits are clustered in the Calderon Canyon region near the Mire Campsite, directly south of Safe Haven, growing on the craggy mountainside beside the crashed ship. Altgard holds 190 Ruby spots in total.
Unlock the Gem Seeker specialty skill and Ruby nodes show up on your minimap when you get close, which makes a farming loop much faster.
The world map is shared across the server, so if another player strips a node before you reach it, you cannot gather from it. Deposits respawn within a few minutes, so just move to the next one and come back.
Turn in the quest and confirm the upgrade
Return to the same NPC and hand over the Splendent Ruby to finish the Specialty Upgrade Test. Korius closes the quest by telling you, “You are an Essence Extraction Professional now,” and the completion panel confirms the promotion.

The two rewards are:
- Essence Extraction Upgrade: Professional — advances the capped proficiency level to Professional.
- Artwork: Artisan Essence Extractor (Bound) — an ornamental item you can place in your Pantheon.
You know it worked when the Essence Extraction screen no longer shows the Novice cap. From there you can keep leveling, earn more Common and Specialty Skill Points, push Proficient Handling, Delicate Touch, and Lady Luck past Lv. 5, and raise your specialty branches beyond their Novice ceiling.
