Draconic gear in AION 2 is built from Balaur materials, and the three you actually hunt for are the Durable Balaur Scale, Leather and Horn. All three are Epic-grade, drop from the same level 74 bosses, and share identical drop rates, so one farm route feeds every piece. Knowing which boss gives the best odds decides how many runs you spend chasing a full set.
Quick answer: Farm the Durable Balaur Scale, Leather and Horn from Kromede’s Desire in Fire Temple and Ferocious Horn Nuakum in Ferocious Horn Den — each drops all three at 30%, the highest rate available.
Durable Balaur material stats
The Durable Balaur Scale, Leather and Horn are tier 1 crafting materials used to make Draconic gear. They are bound, so you cannot buy them from another player, and each sells to a merchant for 1,280 Kina. You need to be level 40 to use them, even though the bosses that drop them sit at level 74.

Six level 74 bosses drop the Durable set. Two of them give every material at 30%, and the rest sit at 10%, so your route should center on Kromede’s Desire and Ferocious Horn Nuakum. Each boss drops the Scale, Leather and Horn at the rate shown, so the percentage applies to all three independently.

| Boss | Drop rate | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 30% | Fire Temple: Mirror Altar | |
| 30% | Ferocious Horn Den: Howling Throne | |
| 10% | Fire Temple: Burning Temple | |
| 10% | Fire Temple: Burning Temple | |
| 10% | Ferocious Horn Den: Fera Surveillance Site | |
| 10% | Ferocious Horn Den: Mau’s Resting Place |
Both top targets are hero-rank bosses with three spawn points. Ferocious Horn Nuakum also drops Balaur’s Essence at 30% and an Amplify Stone Fragment at 20%, so the Ferocious Horn Den run pulls double duty if you need the Essence for processing later.
Hard and Thick Balaur material sources
Below the Durable tier sit the Hard and Thick Balaur materials, which also come as Scale, Leather and Horn. They drop from their own bosses at slightly lower rates, and like the Durable set, each material shares the boss’s listed chance.
| Tier | Boss | Rate | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard | 26% | Urugugu Canyon: Auldor’s Sanctum | |
| Hard | 26% | Vakron Sky Island | |
| Thick | 24% | Draupnir: Bakarma’s Subspace | |
| Thick | 24% | Krao Cave: Sealed Cave |
Balaur’s Essence, the processing fuel
Before you can upgrade a raw Balaur material, you need Balaur’s Essence, an Epic crafting material that every processing recipe consumes two at a time. It is far easier to stockpile than the Scales themselves because it drops at a guaranteed rate from one raid and at generous rates everywhere Balaur materials appear.

| Source | Chance |
|---|---|
| Abyssal Forge: Ludra (Normal) | 100% |
| Monster Drop | 60.67% |
| Field Boss | 43.4% |
| Draupnir, Ferocious Horn Den, Fire Temple, Krao Cave, Urugugu Canyon (Normal) | 30% |
Because the Normal difficulty of Ferocious Horn Den and Fire Temple drops Essence at 30%, the same two dungeons you run for Durable materials also hand you the fuel to refine them.
Balaur Materials Selection Chest
If you would rather not leave the material to chance, the Balaur Materials Selection Chest (Bound) lets you pick a Balaur material directly, which is why every Scale, Leather and Horn variant lists it as a source. The chest is bound, so the materials you take from it stay bound to your character and cannot be sold on.
Processing into Enhanced and Fine materials
Raw Balaur Scales are refined through Jewelcrafting into Enhanced versions, and Horns are refined through Blacksmithing into Fine versions. Every recipe below carries a 95.2% base success chance and consumes two Balaur’s Essence plus the matching hardener or hammer.
| Result | Requirement | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| Jewelcrafting 51 | 2 Balaur’s Essence, 1 Lesser Dragon Scale Hardener | |
| Jewelcrafting 65 | 2 Balaur’s Essence, 1 Intermediate Dragon Scale Hardener | |
| Jewelcrafting 80 | 2 Balaur’s Essence, 1 Superior Dragon Scale Hardener | |
| Blacksmithing 65 | 2 Balaur’s Essence, 1 Lazuli Hammer | |
| Blacksmithing 80 | 2 Balaur’s Essence, 1 Moonstone Hammer |
The Enhanced Durable Balaur Scale and Fine Durable Balaur Horn both sell for 2,626 Kina and, unlike the raw material, can be traded. That makes processing worthwhile even for spare Scales you do not plan to use yourself.
How to confirm you got the right material
A successful drop shows up in your inventory as an Epic-grade item labelled Durable Balaur Scale, Leather or Horn, flagged as bound and marked for Draconic gear. If the item is tradable, you are holding a processed Enhanced or Fine version instead of the raw drop, since only the refined materials can be traded.
Don’t confuse Balaur Leather with Raw Leather
Raw Leather is a completely separate material from Balaur Leather. It is Common grade, available from level 15, tradable, and feeds Strong Leather for ordinary armor crafting rather than Draconic gear. It drops from field beasts instead of level 74 dungeon bosses, so if you are after Draconic parts, skip these mobs entirely.
For Raw Leather itself, dense beast packs give the most per hour. Level 45 Brax on the highland plains drop it alongside Kina and Fera Soul Crystals.

Level 45 Withered Armadon in the forest clearings are the other reliable Raw Leather target, and killing them also builds Armadon pet insight while you farm.
