Emergence Day thins out the people around Marcus Fenix fast, and a lot of the loss happens in cutscenes or is already finished by the time you arrive. Here is who dies and where, following one path through the campaign, with the collectible COG tags that mark the bodies you can actually walk up to.
Quick answer: None of Bravo Squad dies. The named characters whose deaths are shown, or whose bodies you find, in order, are the police chief, Sgt Milani, Shin, Whiskey Squad, Charlie Squad, Daan Riggs, Epsilon Squad, Colonel Trench, Sgt Barnes and Sergeant Major Rustin.
Everything below spoils deaths from across the whole campaign, including the final act.
Act 1 deaths
Survival of the Fittest — the police chief
There are no living officers left in the police station. On the lower floor, in the chief’s office, a man’s body is propped upright against a blood-covered bookcase. The chief’s badge sits on the shelf beside him as a collectible. He is already dead when you reach him, and how it happened is never shown.
Back in the Fold — Sgt Milani
Milani, a Gear sergeant, emerges from the clinic’s emergency entrance and signals for the group to come inside. Gunfire cuts him off beneath the entrance sign. The shooter remains unknown, and the battle for the ambulance bay begins immediately afterward.
Back in the Fold — Shin
Earlier in the chapter, the squad escorts Shin, a Gear, to the clinic. As Tai guides Mayor Shaw toward City Hall’s doors, a Brumak crashes through the nearby wall. Shin pushes the mayor out of danger, then fires his pistol upward while lying on his back; the creature kills him. The next objective is to kill the Brumak.

Hold the Line — Whiskey Squad
The search for Whiskey Squad takes the squad through an iron gate and into the plaza at the Landa Court apartments. In the center, their bodies are displayed across the tiers of the angel fountain, its water turned red. The scene is a trap: Whiskey Squad is dead already, and a sniper starts the ambush seconds later.

During this chapter, a room near a Gear’s remains holds the COG Tags of Master Sergeant Mark Avamor; enter through a gap in the brick wall. In Act 1, Avamor serves as the sergeant defending City Hall. His death is never depicted.
No Gear Left Behind — Charlie Squad
Bravo fights alongside Charlie Squad on the Legacy Bridge and downtown; its members are Valen, Harkniss and Strickland. From a ledge above a sunken road, Bravo sees the three in captivity, but the Locust presence below is too large for the squad to intervene.
Vraahk, the Locust leader, kills Harkniss first, using the blade attached to his arm. Strickland remains restrained and shouts; his death takes place off camera, and his body appears a few minutes later. Valen lies pinned down while a vessel of glowing molten liquid is emptied over his head—the scene’s main focus. Vraahk then lifts his arm and orders the horde to attack the city.
Immediately after the cutscene, two bodies on the road beneath the overpass hold collectible COG Tags: Private Sal Harkniss’s and Private Siv Strickland’s. Valen has no tags available here.
Overrun — the airfield transport and Daan Riggs
As the flight to the airfield ends, a four-engine transport has just touched down. Red dust bursts up as the runway tears open and a Corpser erupts from below. The last view of the plane places it directly in the eruption’s path; no one aboard is shown.
Daan Riggs operates the door gun on the King Raven that takes Bravo from the stadium; Lieutenant Gill is piloting. During the escape, the creature reaches inside the cabin, bringing the Raven down in the woods. At the wreck, Daan dies slumped against the cabin wall, a chest wound visible as Gill holds his hand. Gill remains beside the aircraft, while Bravo continues on foot.
Act 3 deaths
Last Foothold — the Gear at the hotel
A helmeted Gear is pierced from behind by several glowing spikes during the hotel scene beneath the large neon sign. The game never identifies him by name.
Last Foothold — Epsilon Squad
Bravo’s hospital support objective is to assist Manu and Epsilon Squad in securing medical supplies. By then, Epsilon is dead: Gears hang upside down from the hospital’s red entrance canopy, visible both during the fight at the doors and when Bravo reunites with Manu. Manu’s anger is directed at the way they entered.

The Convoy — Colonel Trench
On the Legacy Bridge, Trench intends to detonate the rigged span despite civilians still being on it; Lucas and Captain Grey refuse. A Locust bolt strikes through Trench before he can do anything. Vraahk emerges from the flames and thrusts a long spear through his back. The last sight of Trench is his body folded over the bridge deck, propped up by the spear, as Vraahk passes and Bravo retreats to the trucks. The bridge charges are not used at this point; they become relevant again in the final chapter.
Desperate Times — Sgt Barnes
Barnes is the sergeant from the Black Raven Down side objective in Hold the Line. In Desperate Times, Bravo spots her from a rooftop. She is shooting at Locust from the top of an ambulance at a crossroads. A glowing shot from the clock tower hits and kills her, and the squad is then ordered to reach the tower.

In the following act, Sergeant Betsy Barnes’s COG Tags can be collected from bloodied pavement before arched wooden doors near Kalona Square.
Act 4 deaths
Hope and Ruin — Sergeant Major Rustin
Rustin serves as quartermaster at Fort Vigil and was met on the wall in the preceding chapter. After the retreat to the fort, the squad searches the armory for him and discovers his body among crates, with a Lancer upright beside it. Marcus takes his tags. The game does not show his death.
Once control returns, the message “COG Tags of Sergeant Major Hank Rustin Found!” appears automatically; no item needs to be collected.

Act 5 deaths
Resolute — the Gear Manu carries
While the evacuation ship is moving, a King Raven touches down on its deck. Manu emerges carrying a Gear’s limp body. The team assigned to raise the bridge was ambushed, and the scene does not identify the dead Gear.
Believed dead but alive
Zee, commander of the dry-dock, appears to die but survives. In Resolute, he descends alone through the override hatch to flood the dock and gives Lucas his COG tags. Later, he radios that he is trapped as the chamber fills; static interrupts the signal, leading the squad to believe he is dead. In the closing scenes, a King Raven lands aboard the ship, and Zee disembarks with Tai and pilot Gill. Lucas returns the tags to him. The game never explains his escape.
In the closing chapter, Dom is nearly killed as well: he charges toward the bridge detonator alone, and Vraahk pins him beneath a boot until Marcus tackles Vraahk away. Dom survives. At the end of Overrun, Gill is in the woods beside her wrecked Raven; later in the campaign, she is flying again.
Left open
As Vraahk’s health bar reaches zero in the final battle, Marcus severs his arm with the chainsaw, and Vraahk falls with the bridge deck as it collapses into the water. His body is never shown. Manu is alive in his last appearance aboard the ship before the bridge mission, and he does not appear in the final scenes. The ship leaves survivors in the city; the deck makes clear it cannot wait for them.
Who is alive at the end
- Bravo Squad: Marcus, Dom, Lucas and Mags.
- Zee, Tai Kaliso and Gill.
- Aboard the ship are the Gears and civilians, along with Mayor Shaw, Michaelson and Captain Grey.
Mags coughs throughout the campaign because she is unwell, yet she is aboard the ship and alive at the end.
Gears found only as COG tags
COG tags are one kind of collectible. They identify soldiers; some are characters you saw alive earlier. Some are along the main route:
- Private Brick Rosso, by a police car before Echo Park in Act 1.
- Private First Class Erick Davis, on a crate in the storm-sewer room of Enemy Lines.
- At the crater on the first street of Last Foothold: Sergeant First Class Robin Hamill.
The tags of Harkniss, Strickland, Avamor, Barnes and Rustin belong to characters you saw alive earlier. After the final scene, during the first seconds of the credits, the notification “Carlos Santiago’s COG Tags and Photo Found!” appears. Carlos is Dom’s brother, lost before the events of the campaign.
None of these characters can be saved. Their deaths occur in cutscenes or before the squad arrives, and the game gives no choice or prompt to prevent any of them.
