The F/A-18C Hornet is the plane you fly out of the gate in Ace Combat 8, and it stays useful well past the opening missions because it balances speed, handling, durability, and both air-to-air and air-to-ground punch. It carries two special weapon slots, which means the way you build it decides whether it works as a dogfighter, a ground pounder, or an all-rounder for mixed sorties.
Quick answer: Fit 4AMM for aerial missions, UGB + LASM for ground and naval targets, and mix 4AMM with either UGB or LASM when a briefing throws both at you. Then spend parts on maneuverability, standard missile reload and guidance, and the special weapon you actually brought.

F/A-18C Hornet special weapons and what each one does
Alongside its nose-mounted autocannon and standard guided missiles, the Hornet has two special weapon slots. You pick two of the following three, and that choice sets the plane’s role for the mission.
- 4AMM — Air-to-air missiles that lock onto up to four targets at once. Reliable and versatile, best against drones, swarm drones, quadcopters, smaller fighters, and multi-engine aircraft like bombers.
- UGB — An unguided bomb with a wide blast that shreds clustered surface targets. It has to be dropped at close range, so it is the strongest anti-ground option and also the hardest to aim. Land Battleships are especially vulnerable to it.
- LASM — A long-range air-to-ship missile for striking vessels and ground targets beyond their retaliation reach. It punches through hulls for heavy damage and remains effective against submarines, but deals less damage to mounted weapons.
Because you often get assigned ground objectives rather than enemy pilots, decide the loadout from the briefing’s target mix before you worry about the plane’s stats.

The F/A-18C carries BODY: 3 slots, ARMS: 4 slots, MISC: 3 slots. There isn’t room for every powerful part, so choose each one carefully. Prioritize maneuverability and standard missile performance, which benefit every sortie, then use the remaining capacity to support your equipped special weapon.
Three F/A-18C Hornet loadouts by mission type
These three builds cover the mission types the Hornet gets thrown into. Swap between them at the standby screen before each sortie.
| Mission type | Special weapons | Core parts |
|---|---|---|
| Annihilation (ground targets) | UGB + LASM | Equip BODY with Bypass Ratio Optimization System, Fuel Tank Bulletproof Coating, and Superior Maneuverability. For ARMS, use Long-Range Enhanced Shells, Extended Drop Rack, Air-to-Ship Surveillance Scan Accelerator, Rocket Motor, and Air-to-Ground Ballistics Correction Module. Fill MISC with Auto Strafing Machine Gun Device, Onboard Self-Defense Jammer, and Main Structural Frame. |
| Dogfight (aerial targets) | 4AMM | For BODY, install ECU Software Update, Lightweight Blisk, and Multipurpose Stealth Coating. In ARMS, equip Long-Range Enhanced Shells, New High-Energy Propellant, Air-to-Air Electronic Optical Hybrid Sight, and Airborne Target ID Accelerator. Add Auto Strafing Machine Gun Device, Onboard Self-Defense Jammer, and Small Anti-Icing/De-Icing System to MISC. |
| Escort / Naval / mixed elimination | 4AMM+UGB, LASM+UGB, or 4AMM+LASM | Set up BODY with Fuel Tank Bulletproof Coating, Superior Maneuverability, and Lightweight Blisk. For ARMS, choose the special weapon required by the objectives. Use Auto Strafing Machine Gun Device, Onboard Self-Defense Jammer, and Small Anti-Icing/De-Icing System in MISC. |

Annihilation build (UGB + LASM)
This is the anti-surface setup. LASM handles ships and distant ground targets safely, while UGB cleans up tight clusters of tanks, AA, and land ships up close. The ARMS parts stack drop capacity, ground ballistics correction, and anti-ship scanning so both weapons hit harder and lock faster, and the bulletproof coating helps you survive the dive-bombing runs where AA guns always bite.
Dogfight build (4AMM)
For pure air combat, 4AMM’s four-target lock lets you thin out groups quickly. The build leans into lock-on speed and missile velocity with the Air-to-Air Electronic Optical Hybrid Sight and High-Energy Propellant, while ECU Software Update extends your High-G turns and Lightweight Blisk sharpens acceleration for chasing turning fighters.
Mixed-threat build (alternate specials)
Escort, naval, and combined-elimination missions reward carrying one air option and one surface option. Keep the BODY and MISC frame stable across these, then flex your ARMS slots toward whichever special weapon the current objectives lean on. If the briefing is heavy on aircraft, boost 4AMM; if it is packed with ships or ground armor, pour the slots into UGB or LASM instead.

Which parts to buy first
If MRP is tight, buy flexible parts before specialized ones. Standard missiles and handling matter on every mission and keep paying off even after you move on from the Hornet, so prioritize in this order.
- Target ID Accelerator (MSL) — shortens standard missile reload.
- Superior Maneuverability — improves handling in every direction.
- Guidance Optimization Software (MSL) — tightens standard missile tracking.
- Air-to-Air Electronic Optical Hybrid Sight — faster, longer A2A special weapon locks.
- Onboard Self-Defense Jammer — weakens incoming enemy missiles.
- Mission-specific special weapon upgrades — buy these last, when a sortie needs them.
Upgrade the limitation you actually hit. If you keep landing with missiles to spare, extra payload does nothing for you. If you keep flying home empty, capacity suddenly matters. Parts for the Hornet are bought through the Aircraft Tree with MRP earned by replaying campaign missions, while Ace Combat Online hands out parts and aircraft through mission rewards, Pilot Rank unlocks, and blueprint exchanges.
You will know a build is working when the plane turns onto targets without bleeding speed and your missiles connect on hard-turning enemies. If a loadout keeps failing a mission, change the special weapons before you change your approach. The Hornet is flexible enough that matching it to the briefing almost always matters more than raw stats.
