In Fisch, the Coelacanth is a Rare fish found in the Deep Ocean, a wide expanse of open water beyond the islands bordering the map. A standard Fishing Rod is all you need to catch one once you can sail that far; no special gear is required.

Quick answer: Boat out to the Deep Ocean marker, equip a Fishing Rod, cast, and complete the reel-in minigame. Clear weather, night, and Spring or Autumn raise your chances.

Coelacanth spawn conditions in the Deep Ocean

The Coelacanth appears in the Ocean region, specifically in the Deep Ocean waters. It has a Resilience of 40, which sits in the moderate range, so an entry-level rod can still land it with a bit of patience. The fish does not require a preferred bait to bite.

The Coelacanth is an Unfavoring catch, meaning its bite chance actually drops as your luck stat goes up. If you are struggling, running lower luck can help rather than hurt.

How to catch the Coelacanth

Spawn a boat at any island dock. A departure from the Moosewood harbor works well since it gives a clear run out toward open water.
Drive straight out across the ocean, heading away from every island toward the edge of the map. Watch the on-screen area marker and keep going until it reads Deep Ocean.

Stop the boat at the Deep Ocean indicator and equip your Fishing Rod. The fish needs no bait to bite, but attaching Minnow bait speeds up how quickly you get hits.

Cast the line and play the reel-in minigame when a fish bites. Follow the “Click & Hold Anywhere” prompt until the catch completes. Repeat casts until a Coelacanth is the fish on the hook.

How to confirm the catch

You will know the catch landed when a notification reads something like “You just caught a Big Coelacanth,” along with the weight and your first-catch tally. Your character also calls out a line such as “It’s a Coelacanth!” or “Woah, a Coelacanth!” The fish then shows up in your inventory, where you can hold or sell it.

Coelacanth weight, value, and sizes

The Coelacanth gives 210 XP and sells for 34.5 C$ per kilogram. Heavier fish are worth more, so the payout scales with the weight you pull in.

TierWeightSell value
Minimum7kg241.5 C$
Average8.5kg293.3 C$
Base10kg345 C$
Maximum21kg725 C$

Size labels depend purely on weight. A Coelacanth under 3.5kg counts as Tiny, under 6.9kg as Small, above 10kg as Big, and above 19.9kg as Giant.

Other ways to get the Coelacanth

Rod fishing in the Deep Ocean is the most direct route, but the Coelacanth also pulls from a Carbon Crate at a 4.55% chance. Beyond the standard Ocean spawn, it can be caught during a range of events and hunts, including Megalodon Hunt, Orca Migration, Blue Whale Migration, Golden Tide, Lovestorm, and the various Algae Hunt pools at islands such as Ancient Isle and Mushgrove Swamp.

During the Ashfall event, a Coelacanth can roll the Doomsday mutation at a 10% chance no matter where it is caught, so Ashfall is worth targeting if you want that variant.
