Poison is one of the nastiest things that can happen to William in Valor Mortis. Step into a cloud of green gas and a meter starts filling, your movement slows to a crawl, and once that bar maxes out you die almost instantly. You cannot heal your way through it either, which is why so many early poison pits feel like dead ends. They are meant to.
Quick answer: Unlock the Shield Transmutation in the University, then equip and raise it before you step into the gas. While it is active, poison buildup stops completely and you can walk straight through.

What poison does to William
Poison works as a status buildup rather than straight damage. A skull meter climbs the whole time you stand in the gas, and your speed drops while it ticks up. If the meter fills, it is effectively a one-shot kill, so sitting in a cloud and spamming Ferrofluid Flask heals will not save you.
These hazards show up long before you have any answer for them. You will run into poison as early as the Valley of Ashes, and heavier stretches appear later in places like the Fortress and the crypt beneath the Abandoned Church. Treat every early poison section as a note to yourself to come back later.

Add to Google Preferences →The Shield Transmutation is the real fix
The Shield Transmutation is the piece of kit that makes poison a non-issue. It is a Transmutation that protects you from both enemy attacks and environmental hazards, so holding it up while you walk cancels the gas entirely. No buildup, no slowdown, no damage.
Beyond poison it doubles as a defensive tool. It is durable, blocks a wide range of threats, and has Counter Blast built in, which stores the damage it soaks while raised and fires it back when you lower the shield. For crossing a toxic room, though, you only care about one job, and it does it from the moment you equip it.

How to unlock the Shield Transmutation in the University
The Shield Transmutation is picked up in the University, one of the game’s later regions, around Chapter 8. You cannot miss it. It is a required pickup to push through the level toward the boss at the end, so if you are making progress there, it is coming your way regardless.

Once it is in your kit, it stays there. You can fast travel back to any poison area you left behind and clear it whenever you like.
Crossing poison once you have the shield
Equip the Shield Transmutation, raise it, and walk into the gas. The poison meter will not move while the shield is up, so you can take your time lining up jumps, grabbing chests, and reading the path ahead.
Keeping the shield active drains Nephtoglobin. If you run the tank dry partway across a large poison field, the shield drops and the buildup starts again, so carry Nephtoglobin Vials and keep an eye on the gauge on long crossings.
You know it is working the moment you step in. With the shield up, the skull meter stays empty and William moves at normal speed instead of slogging through at the usual poison crawl.

Grabbing loot before you have the shield
You are not completely stuck in the early game. You can dodge through poison, since the invulnerability frames on a dodge also skip past some of the buildup, but you cannot sprint in it. With a decent Endurance pool you can dodge into small patches to snatch a chest or an item on a ledge, then dodge back out.
The pattern in deeper toxic rooms is the same. Drop down into the fog, grab what is there, and immediately climb the nearest ladder or hop onto a beam above the gas before the meter climbs too high. That is enough to pull items like a Rare Catalyst Clot or Deadly Rounds out of a poison basin. It is not enough to cross a full room such as the ones in the Fortress, which is where the shield becomes mandatory.

There is no cure or antidote item
Do not waste time hunting for a potion. There is no consumable that prevents poison buildup and none that removes buildup you have already taken. The Shield Transmutation is the intended answer, which fits how the whole game is built around backtracking with new abilities. If you do get caught in a cloud without it, your only move is to get out fast, after which the buildup slowly drains on its own.
So the real hurdle is not the technique, it is simply reaching the University and picking the shield up. Once you do, every poison area you walked away from earlier opens back up, and the toxic crossings that used to kill you become a short, safe stroll.
