Coal is a common crafting material in Enshrouded that only appears in the Albaneve Summits biome. It shows up as dark, charcoal-colored ore veins on mountain faces, rocky ledges, and inside the region’s caves. You break it loose with a pickaxe, and you need it to smelt Gold Bars and Silver Bars, along with a long list of steel gear and higher-tier armor.
Quick answer: Mine Coal with any pickaxe from the dark veins in Albaneve Summits. The two easiest surface deposits sit just northeast and southeast of the Ancient Spire – Albaneve Summits fast-travel point.
Requirements before you farm Coal
Coal is a level 33 material tied to the Albaneve Summits region, so this is mid-game content rather than something you reach early. You need two things before heading out.
- A pickaxe equipped. Any pickaxe works; a higher-tier one like the Gilded Pickaxe clears veins faster.
- Access to the Albaneve Summits biome and, ideally, an unlocked Ancient Spire there for fast travel.
Striking a vein drops Coal in chunks alongside Granite and Albaneve Summits Dirt, and each hit also gives you character experience.

Of the two, this is the safer site. It lies on a mountain cliff beside an icy river, near a Flame Shrine, and no enemies patrol the area. There are fewer veins here than at the second spot, but you can mine without threats and take your time.

Set a custom waypoint here once you arrive so you can glide straight back to it from the spire on future runs.
Coal location 2: Southeast of the Albaneve Summits Ancient Spire
The second deposit holds more Coal in one place, which makes it the better pick when you need to stock up fast. It sits on a cliff edge beside a dirt road and a wooden cabin, directly overlooking the Shroud border, so watch your footing while you mine.

Mines and caves that stock Coal
If you want larger quantities and don’t mind fighting, several underground spots in Albaneve Summits carry Coal veins. Expect bats, spiders, and in one case a Cyclops.
| Location | What’s inside | Enemies |
|---|---|---|
| Rothstep Mining Settlement | Coal, Amethyst, Luminous Growth | Bats |
| Albaneve Cave Passage #3 | Coal | Spiders |
| Albaneve Cave Passage #6 | Coal, Iron Ore, Luminous Growth | Bats, Spiders |
| Cyclops Cave Passage #2 | Coal, Iron Ore, Luminous Growth | Bats, Cyclops |
The Rothstep Mining Settlement sits northwest of the Albaneve Summits Ancient Spire and is the most reliable stocked source if you’d rather mine in volume than farm the surface ledges.
What Coal is used for
Coal is mainly a smelting fuel. You feed it into the Blast Furnace to produce metal bars, and it also appears in several armor sets and crafted stations. A few of the most common uses:
- Smelting Gold Bars, Silver Bars, Bronze Bars, and Copper Bars at the Blast Furnace.
- The full Brazen Bull armor set at the Blacksmith.
- Building pieces like the Balefire Brazier, Big Steel Barrel, and Granite Fireplace.
- Crafted materials such as Flammable Goo and Glass.
Coal stacks high, so a single run through one of the surface spots or the Rothstep mine usually covers several smelting jobs. You’ll know a vein is worth mining when the Harvest prompt appears and Coal lands in your inventory alongside Granite and Albaneve Summits Dirt. Once you have an active waypoint on each spot, refilling your stock is a quick glide down from the spire whenever your bars run low.
