A lot of what keeps Rose alive in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse lives behind quick tutorial prompts and a few menu screens that are easy to skim past. Saving, healing, casting spells, upgrading health, and marking the map all run on small rules the game states once and then leaves you to remember. Here are ten of those systems worth knowing early, pulled straight from the game’s own text.
Quick answer: Save and heal at a Mirror of Life, refill mana by hitting enemies, collect Heart Fragments for permanent stat gains, and mark secrets on the map. Holy Light arrives later and blocks attacks.
Mirror of Life saves, heals, and refills potions
Walk up to a Mirror of Life and press R1 to use it. The prompt reads: “This mirror saves your progress, you heal yourself completely and fill your potions. Upon use, roaming monsters will reappear. If you die, you will resume your adventure at the last mirror you interacted with.”
So a single mirror does three jobs at once. It records your progress, brings Rose back to full health, and tops up your potions. Death sends you back to the last mirror you touched. The trade-off is that wandering enemies in the area come back when you use it.

Potions are separate from the mirror’s instant heal. You spend one with HEAL [L1], and the prompt “HEAL [L1]” appears over Rose. The potion count sits beside the mana bar and fills back up whenever you use a mirror.
Spells cost mana, and attacking refills it
Casting is tied to a resource you build in combat. The tutorial reads: “Press [Triangle] to cast a spell. Spells require Mana to cast. Recover Mana by attacking enemies.” Hitting enemies with your weapon fills the blue mana bar, so trading blows is what pays for your next cast.

A counter in the top right of the HUD tracks how many hits you have landed with the equipped spell, shown as readings like “Hit 8/20 time with this spell.” and “Hit 15/20 time with this spell.”
Backward dodge and slide for repositioning
Two defensive moves give Rose room to breathe. For the dodge, the tutorial reads: “Press [Circle] while stationary to perform a backward dodge. Pressing [Circle] again during the first dodge will cause you to move even further back.” Tapping Circle a second time during the first dodge extends the distance.

The slide covers the rest. Its text reads: “Press [left stick] + [Circle] to slide. Sliding allows you to squeeze through narrow passages, pass through enemies, and reposition Rose out of harm’s way during combat.” Use it to fit through tight gaps, move through enemies, and reset your spacing mid-fight.
Permanent upgrades: Heart Fragments, stat books, and leveling
Defeating enemies earns experience. Reaching a new level brings up a gold flash labeled “Level Up!” Pickups found throughout the world also grant permanent boosts as soon as Rose touches them.
Red books handle attack and defense. One shows “ATK Up!” and another shows “DEF Up!” Collecting them happens automatically as you walk into them.
Heart Fragments raise your core stats over time. The health version reads: “You’ve been blessed with a Brave Heart Fragment! Collect 4 Brave Heart Fragments to permanently increase Rose’s Health.” The mana version appears as “1/4 Wise Heart’s Fragments!”
| Fragment | What it raises |
|---|---|
| Brave Heart Fragment | Rose’s Health |
| Wise Heart’s Fragments | Mana |
Place map markers on secrets you can’t reach yet
The Map tab lets you pin spots to revisit. Its text reads: “Placing a MARKER on a secret or an unreachable location allows you to return to it later. Press [Square] while hovering on the map to place a marker.” You open the map from a prompt like “OPEN MAP” that appears in the world.

At the bottom of the map, “PLACE/ERASE MARKER” appears with a live tally—”0/50 REMAINING MARKERS”—showing how many markers are still available to place.
Set weapons and relics in the Equipment menu
Loadout choices live in the Equipment menu, split between the Armoury and the Relics screen. You can equip up to three relics at once, and the Relics screen shows three slots for them.
Relics carry their own effects. The Crypt Key relic reads: “Fully restores Rose’s health and mana when she opens a chest.” On the weapon side, the Armoury lists the Cestus as “Ordinary”, “ATK 25”, with the description “A fast weapon that becomes more and more lethal as you hit enemies with it.”
Holy Light blocks attacks once it unlocks
Holy Light is an ability you gain later in the game, not something available from the start. When it unlocks, the tutorial reads: “Holy Light. Hold down L2 to manifest a halo of light to disperse the Chaos Shard. Quickly press the button before being hit to perform a Light Parade that protects you from damage.”

The timing is the part to remember. A follow-up prompt reads: “Press L2 just before receiving an attack to block it.” Tap L2 right as a hit is about to land, and the Light Parade shields Rose from the damage. These ten cover the systems worth settling into early, not an exhaustive rundown.
