Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 — Nyra and Malum’s Cutscenes Compared

Both protagonists march through the same campaign over Akrimonus Prime, yet their final scenes resolve in opposite ways.

Both protagonists march through the same campaign over Akrimonus Prime, yet their final scenes resolve in opposite ways.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 hands you a choice before the story begins, and that choice reaches all the way to its final frame. You play either Ultramarine Sternguard Veteran Malum Caedo, returning from the first game, or Sister of Battle Celestian Nyra Veyrath, the sequel’s new lead. Their campaigns follow the exact same chain of events, shot for shot, but the dialogue, the character on screen, and the ending change depending on who you took into battle.

Quick answer: Nyra and Malum play through an identical sequence of story beats over Akrimonus Prime. The only hard divergence is the epilogue — Nyra dies and leaves only a broken helmet, while Malum is dug out of the wreckage alive.

Two protagonists, one mirrored campaign

Both heroes serve aboard the Imperial Fleet Abidance, holding station over Akrimonus Prime as heretical corruption spreads across the world. The mission framing is the same for each: investigate and neutralise the corruption. From there, the cutscenes run through the identical set of events, just with a different warrior at the center of every scene.

Nyra’s black Adepta Sororitas armour has red lining and fleur-de-lis marks, contrasting with her white hair; she fights with a bolt pistol alongside a power sword. Malum wears cobalt-blue Ultramarines armour edged in gold and a white veteran helmet, and carries a heavy bolt pistol and an Astartes chainsword. Both stories begin with their hero executing a Chaos Marine who has taken an Imperial soldier hostage.

The shared story beats over Akrimonus Prime

The campaign moves from orbit to the surface in a fixed order. After the opening execution, each hero stands over the dead and launches in a boarding craft toward a corrupted vessel, breaks inside while the fleet trades fire in orbit, survives the ship’s reactor core rupturing near the planet, and then drops onto the burning surface for a last stand against a Greater Daemon before Exterminatus cracks the world apart.

Where the dialogue changes

The lines spoken at each beat are rewritten for each hero, and they reflect the difference between a faith-driven Sister of Battle and a disciplined Space Marine veteran. Nyra frames her fight through devotion and vengeance for her fallen sisters, while Malum leans into duty and honour. The spoken lines line up beat for beat like this.

The endings diverge: martyrdom versus survival

Up to the orbital bombardment, the two campaigns are the same story told twice. The epilogue is where they split. In both versions, Death Korps of Krieg troops move through the ruins of Akrimonus Prime after the battle, but what they find is different.

For Nyra, the Krieg soldiers recover only her damaged helmet from among the dead. Nothing else of her is found, pointing clearly to her death and martyrdom. For Malum, the same soldiers dig through the wreckage and pull him out alive and conscious. His story ends with a survivor; hers ends with a relic.

Because the two runs resolve differently, seeing both endings means playing the campaign twice, once as each hero.
