Enshrouded: How to Find the Carpenter (Cade Hawthorn) in the Ancient Vault

Reach the Shroud-covered vault east of Braelyn Bridge, mine through the sealed door, and wake Cade Hawthorn to open your base-building economy.

Reach the Shroud-covered vault east of Braelyn Bridge, mine through the sealed door, and wake Cade Hawthorn to open your base-building economy.

Cade Hawthorn, the Carpenter, sleeps inside the Ancient Vault – Carpenter, a ruin buried under the Shroud to the east of Braelyn Bridge in the Low Meadows. Waking him opens the woodworking and construction side of Enshrouded, including furniture, storage chests, the Kiln, the Table Saw, and masonry tools. The trip is short, but the vault sits inside deadly mist, so preparation matters more than combat here.

Quick answer: Travel east from the Springlands to the Ancient Vault – Carpenter, glide down through the Shroud, break the rubble blocking the door with a pickaxe, then press E on the glowing pod to awaken Cade Hawthorn.

Before you set out: Flame level and gear

The vault and the ground around it are flooded with Shroud, and your Shroud timer runs down the whole time you are inside. Upgrade your Flame Altar to Level 2 before you go, since that extends how long you can stay in the mist. A short timer is the only thing that can turn this into a failed run.

The Flame Altar’s Strengthen the Flame screen lists the upgrade requirements for raising the Flame Level from 1 to 2.
  • A Glider for crossing the chasm quickly.
  • A pickaxe (a Scrappy Pickaxe is enough) to clear the sealed door.
  • A melee weapon or bow for the specter-type enemies and flying banshees along the route.
  • Healing items and your best available armor.

Fast travel does not work while you are inside the Shroud, so plan to exit on foot or respawn at a beacon if things go wrong.

Route to the Ancient Vault – Carpenter

Head east from the starting region toward the marker for the Ancient Vault – Carpenter, east of Braelyn Bridge. The approach drops into a Shroud valley, and you clear most of it in the air rather than on foot.

Start from the cliffside altar overlooking the Shroud, east of Braelyn Bridge. Leave the campsite and run out onto the stone platforms into the mist. Your Shroud timer begins ticking the moment you enter.

At the edge of the platforms, deploy your Glider and descend into the chasm, heading generally east toward the blue glowing flora on the valley floor. Land before your stamina runs out.

Follow the ridge along the valley. You will pass through the Flame Sanctum section and chart it as a new location. Look for a Shroud hourglass capsule next to a tall wire mesh wall, and interact with the hourglass to restore time in the Shroud.
Climb to the top of the red wire mesh wall. This is the one piece of verticality on the route, and it sets up the glide across the gap to the vault.

Jump off the top of the mesh and glide east or northeast across the cavern. Aim for the illuminated ledge on the far side, which ends at a doorway blocked by a mound of rubble.

Break in and awaken Cade Hawthorn

The vault chamber is fully sealed by breakable rubble. You cannot walk in until you clear it.

Equip your pickaxe and mine away the rubble blocking the doorway. Explosive Powder Balls work as an alternative if you prefer to blow the wall open instead of digging.

Step into the lit chamber filled with pods and urns. A specter-type enemy guards the room; deal with it before interacting with anything.
Walk up to the glowing pink pod and press E to “Awaken Survivor.” The game shows “SOUL DISCOVERED! CADE HAWTHORN,” and the quest objective advances to “Summon The Carpenter.”

The moment you touch the pod, check for recipe-unlock banners to verify it worked. They reveal new Decoration Workbench recipes, including Scrap Pot IV, and an Advanced Rake at the Blacksmith. After securing his soul, leave the vault and fast travel to a base.

Summon Cade at your base

Discovering his soul is only the first half. Back inside an active Flame Altar area, craft a Summoning Staff and use it to place Cade, the same way you set up the Blacksmith. You can give him his own sheltered room or drop him into a building you already own. He needs a roof over his head to work.

Cade holds 338 recipes in total and acts as the Carpenter station. His list covers doors, windows, beds, tables, chests, lighting, braziers, and the utility stations your base depends on. His quests later point you toward the Kiln, Table Saw, and Masonry Tools, which gate clay, refined wood, and stone construction respectively.

Reward reference: vault loot and early Carpenter unlocks

While you are inside the Shroud here, a second rubble wall near the Flame Sanctum section hides a silver chest. Mining it open yields a Scrappy Greatsword. These are the key items tied to this trip and to Cade’s first recipes, with their shipped values.

The Advanced Glider is one of Cade’s own recipes and a direct upgrade for every future expedition, so it is worth crafting as soon as his A Graceful Flight quest unlocks. The Scrappy Greatsword scales from 16 Cutting damage at level 1 up to 127 at level 50, making the detour for the silver chest a reasonable side trip while you are already in the mist.

With Cade placed and his stations fed, the construction economy opens up: group your logs, planks, clay, and stone near him and prioritize the Kiln early, since processed clay and stone block several later building recipes. From there, his furniture and decoration pieces feed directly into Comfort and base upgrades across Embervale.
