Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 kills off Kyle “Gaz” Garrick in one of its campaign cinematics. The scene is short, cold, and quiet. Price, Ghost, and Gaz are tied to chairs in a dark holding room. Archer, the villain who carries Mads Mikkelsen’s likeness, walks in, explains why they’re there, and shoots Gaz in the head mid-sentence. Story spoilers follow.

Quick answer: Archer executes Gaz with one suppressed pistol shot to the head after the captured trio learns they are being framed for assassinating North Korea’s Supreme Leader. Price and Ghost survive.

Gaz’s death scene in Modern Warfare 4, beat by beat

The cutscene runs a little under three minutes. It starts with an argument and ends with a body in the middle of the room. Here is the order of events.

MomentWhat happens
OpeningPrice, Ghost, and Gaz argue while tied to chairs
Gaz speaks upHe tells Price there’s a line they don’t cross
Archer entersHe mocks Gaz’s idealism from the doorway
The frame-upHe links their capture to the Supreme Leader’s assassination
“No lines”Archer says he has no limits, unlike them
ExecutionOne suppressed pistol shot to Gaz’s head
AftermathPrice lunges, Archer shoves him back down
ExitArcher orders Price and Ghost into separate blocks

The killing itself takes about two seconds. Archer steps behind Gaz, draws the pistol, and fires while Gaz is still insisting that no one will believe Archer’s story. Ghost and Price both shout Gaz’s name. Price threatens to kill Archer, who pushes him back into the chair and tells him plainly that no rescue mission is coming.

The Price and Ghost argument that sets it up

Before Archer shows up, the three captives are already falling apart. Ghost blames Price for getting them caught and for turning on his own people. Price fires back that Ghost chased the wrong target and should have gone after Archer instead. Their exchange about cutting the heads off snakes ends with Price’s bitter point that they are now sitting inside the nest.

Gaz is the one who tries to pull them back together. He tells Price there is a line that separates them from the enemy, and that their job is to hold it. He says he would have followed Price through hell, but Price chose to go it alone, and none of them are any good on their own. Those are his last real words to his captain, and they give the shot that follows its weight.

Archer’s frame-up: The North Korea assassination

Archer’s entrance is calm. He asks how the boys are getting along, then needles Gaz for his idealism, asking what good it did if it landed him here, captured.

He goes on to disclose that the trio were taken into custody after North Korea’s Supreme Leader was assassinated. Price is baffled by the claim. Ghost understands first: Archer began a war, and the three of them will be blamed for it. This connects the campaign’s Korean Peninsula conflict directly to the Task Force 141 storyline, with Archer behind both.

Archer also turns Gaz’s speech against him. Gaz was right that lines separate them, Archer says. The difference is that Archer doesn’t have any, which is why he is standing and they are tied to chairs. His last word before firing is a dismissive “Idealism,” followed by a jab at Price that he should have taught Gaz better.

Archer and Mads Mikkelsen: What is confirmed

Mikkelsen was revealed as a major antagonist in the Modern Warfare 4 campaign trailer during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. Activision describes Archer as a dangerous enemy who is set to receive an unknown, catastrophic weapon of war. Its own press materials stopped short of saying outright that Mikkelsen plays Archer. The cutscene settles it in practice, since the character named Archer has Mikkelsen’s face.

  • Archer is the person who orders Price and Ghost locked up and kills Gaz.
  • He is tied to the war on the Korean Peninsula and to the North Korean leader’s assassination.
  • His real name, backstory, and the nature of the weapon he’s after are still unknown.
  • This is Mikkelsen’s second major game role, after Cliff Unger in Death Stranding.

The reveal trailer already set up how Archer treats Price. In it, he promises Price that he will make him cry for mercy as everything and everyone he cares about dies. Killing Gaz in front of him is the first time the campaign follows through on that threat.

Where the scene sits in the Modern Warfare 4 campaign

Modern Warfare 4 picks up after Price kills General Shepherd in Modern Warfare III. Task Force 141 has been disbanded, Price is on the run, and orders send Gaz and Ghost to bring their former captain in or kill him. Meanwhile, Price has made an uneasy alliance with Valeria Garza of the Las Almas Cartel. That fractured situation explains why the three men in the cell are arguing about loyalty instead of working out an escape.

In the game, the cutscene comes right after a mission ending on a snowy airfield. The player fights off attackers on the way to an extraction helicopter, triggers a remote detonator that collapses the runway, and the squad looks over a cylindrical tech canister recovered on the mission. Then it cuts to the interrogation room.

Campaign early access is live now, which is why the scene is already spreading ahead of the full release on October 23rd. Gaz’s death leaves Price and Ghost, who were on opposite sides of a manhunt, as fellow prisoners held in separate cell blocks. Archer is betting that the world has already written them off. His parting words make the point directly: they’re on the other side now.
