Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ has 66 Operator Traits, which are passive perks attached to individual Operators. Each Operator can only ever hold 18 Trait Points, so no single Operator gets close to unlocking everything. You can’t refund a pick, which means you should know how the trees are built before you spend anything.
Quick answer: Exfil with an Operator to level their Dog Tag. Each level grants one Trait Point, up to 18 at Onyx III. Spend points at the FOB’s Operators station.

How to get Trait Points in MW4 DMZ
Trait Points come from an Operator’s Dog Tag, which levels up with DMZ XP. Successful exfils drive that progress. The Dog Tag has 18 levels spread across six tiers, and each tier has three steps (I, II, and III). Every level awards exactly one Trait Point.
| Dog Tag tier | Levels | Total Trait Points at tier III |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | I–III | 3 |
| Bronze | I–III | 6 |
| Silver | I–III | 9 |
| Gold | I–III | 12 |
| Damascus | I–III | 15 |
| Onyx | I–III | 18 |
Points belong to the Operator who earned them. Leveling one Operator does nothing for the others. If you run several Active Duty Operators, each one builds its own tree on its own schedule, so you can set up different builds for different playstyles.

You’ll know a pick worked when the trait appears unlocked in that Operator’s tree and the unspent point count goes down. You can check an Operator’s equipped Traits later from the Operator menu or the quick navigation menu.
Traits cannot be respecced or refunded. Choosing one trait in a branch locks you out of the other options in that branch for that Operator.

How each Trait tree is structured
The 66 Traits form three branches of 22 each: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist. Each branch shows six Major Traits at all times, while the remaining 16 Minor Traits are randomized. This means two players using the same Operator can have different trees.
- Your first point in any tree always goes to a random Minor Trait.
- Major Traits come in pairs at the third, sixth, and ninth point in a tree. You get one trait from each pair.
- Minor Traits fill the gaps in groups of three. Each group stays hidden until you unlock the Major Trait before it.
- A single tree takes nine points at most, so 18 points can complete two trees or be spread across all three.
All Major Traits in MW4 DMZ
In the tables below, the “Point in tree” column shows how many points you must have in that tree before the pair opens up. Traits that share a number are the two options in the same branch, so you can take only one of them.

Warfighter Traits
Warfighter covers combat, durability, and equipment upkeep.
| Trait | Effect | Point in tree |
|---|---|---|
| Combat Resistance | Less explosive damage and weaker enemy tactical effects | 3 |
| Equipment Professional | Lethals and Tacticals slowly recharge after use, up to slot max | 3 |
| Quick Fix | Kills on Operators or hostiles shorten the health regen delay | 6 |
| Viper Sense | Thermal optics and AI targeting systems cannot detect you | 6 |
| Adaptive Restock | Enemy hostiles drop one extra item | 9 |
| Possum | Once per match, self revive from death into Last Stand at full health | 9 |
Scout Traits
Scout covers looting, crafting, and controlling UAV information, both your own and the enemy’s.
| Trait | Effect | Point in tree |
|---|---|---|
| Container Looter | Chance of one extra piece of loot from containers | 3 |
| Hostile Looter | Hostiles sometimes drop Uncommon printer ingredients, rarely Rare ones | 3 |
| UAV Upgrade | Longer UAV range and duration, upgraded to Advanced UAVs | 6 |
| Field Crafting | Craft items from Common printer resources while deployed | 6 |
| Thermal Padding | Hidden from UAVs, and Advanced UAVs only detect you as a regular UAV would | 9 |
| Overwatch | UAV towers you activate never expire | 9 |
Survivalist Traits
Survivalist covers healing, revives, and getting out alive after you go down.
| Trait | Effect | Point in tree |
|---|---|---|
| Consumable Duration | Consumables last longer | 3 |
| Faster Revive | Faster revive speed | 3 |
| Free Revive | Your first Wound repairs itself | 6 |
| Impact Smokes | Smoke deploys when you are downed | 6 |
| Die Hard | Reaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it automatically, plus infinite bleed-out | 9 |
| Numb the Pain | Revives apply Painkillers and Smelling Salts effects | 9 |

Minor Traits you may see in each tree
Minor Traits are randomized, so there’s no fixed list of what your tree will offer. Each one costs a single point. The Minor Traits below have appeared in players’ trees, including as the random starting pick.
| Minor Trait | Tree | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Popcorn Lethals | Warfighter | Hostiles hit by Lethals are more likely to drop Lethals |
| Adrenaline Burst | Warfighter | Killing an enemy resets tactical sprint |
| Killing Spree | Warfighter | Kills keep active effects going longer, up to twice their usual duration |
| LT Hunter | Warfighter | Activating a Lieutenant Tower grants extra paid intel |
| Pack Rat | Scout | +20% max printer resource capacity, which stacks with Resource Hoarder |
| Investor | Scout | Slightly more cash extracted |
| Deep Breath | Survivalist | Longer underwater breath time |
| Air Superiority | Survivalist | UAV towers and SAM sites stay captured longer |
| Metabolism | Survivalist | Slowly regenerates health lost via tourniquet |

Resetting Traits: new Operators, MIA, and Operator Prestige
You can only clear a build in two ways. You can start fresh with a new Operator, or you can Prestige the one you have. Losing an Operator doesn’t reset their Traits. An Operator who dies during a deployment goes MIA, and paying in-game cash to rescue them brings them back with every Trait intact. They lose their gear, though, and the rescue fee goes up as they earn more Traits. If you dismiss an MIA Operator instead of paying, you start over with a new Operator who has no Traits.
Operator Prestige unlocks when an Active Duty Operator reaches Onyx III, has spent all 18 Trait Points, and is not MIA. It operates independently of the player Prestige ranks from 1–55 and the DMZ level track from 1–70. Prestiging consumes the required gear and cash, resets the Operator’s Traits, and grants one random permanent Prestige Trait.
| Prestige | Weapons | Plate Carrier, Backpack, ingredients | DMZ Cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 2, three attachment slots each | Rare, plus 4 Rare ingredients | 200,000 |
| Second | 2, four attachment slots each | Epic, plus 4 Epic ingredients | 300,000 |
| Third and later | 2, four attachment slots each | Legendary, plus 4 Legendary ingredients | 500,000 |
An Operator can have a maximum of three Prestige Traits. Beginning with the fourth Prestige, you receive a new random trait to either use in place of one of your existing three or decline. The Operator retains these traits if dismissed, moved to another Active Duty slot, or given a different skin.
Confirming Prestige consumes the required gear, so first remove from the Loadout and Backpack anything you want to keep.
In practice, 18 points means you’ll commit to two finished trees or a spread across all three. A finished tree gives you its random starting Minor Trait, three Major Traits, and five more Minor Traits. Everything else in that tree stays locked until you start over with a new Operator or Prestige.
