What Crane Bells Do in Phantom Blade Zero (Memories and Days Remaining)

The first rest at each Crane Bell plays a memory of Soul and Zuo Shang and permanently drops Days Remaining by one.

Quick answer: Crane Bells are crane-shaped bells. The first rest at one plays a memory of Soul’s past with Zuo Shang and permanently takes one day off Days Remaining.

Phantom Blade Zero runs on a clock, and Crane Bells are one of the things that move it forward. The cost applies on PATHBREAKER, the default difficulty, and is not limited to 66 Days mode.

Crane Bell location: the first one after Peng Meng, the Axemaster

A Crane Bell is easy to tell apart from an ordinary bell. It stands next to a crane statue and is surrounded by blue flowers and lit candles. When you get close, an E prompt appears.

The first one is in Weeping Creek Valley. It appears once you defeat Peng Meng, the Axemaster, about 20 metres from where that fight ends, at the edge of his arena by the river. When Peng Meng falls, the game shows the book “The ‘Four Axes’ Case Files – The Axemaster’s Final Request”. The bell comes into view right after that.

How to rest at a Crane Bell

Walk up to the Crane Bell beside the crane statue. Press E when the prompt appears.
Soul sits down beside the bell to rest. You don’t need to press anything else to start the memory.

A painted, ink-style scene first shows two children sprinting. The memory then shifts to an extended animated look back at Soul and Zuo Shang as children, lasting roughly three and a half minutes.

Read the “Crane Bell” tutorial card that appears when the flashback ends. Its text reads “Rest at Crane Shaped Bells to relive past memories and uncover Zuo Shang’s lingering memories in the Discordance. Gather all clues to uncover the truth!”

Check the lower-right corner once you’re back in the world. The counter now reads “Days Remaining:65”.

The day each Crane Bell rest costs

The game states the cost directly:

“Communing with the Crane Bells will trigger a memory of the past, but Soul will rest for the night, permanently reducing your Remaining Days by one.”

“Days lost to Crane Bells and story progression cannot be recovered.”

The story gives Soul a sixty-six-day survival window: venom from the Tainted Heart sustains him for that span. The Chapter 1 card, AGAINST THE FLOW, starts the Days Remaining counter at “Days Remaining: 66”. After the first Crane Bell rest on PATHBREAKER, the display falls to “Days Remaining:65”.

A Crane Bell is marked by a crane statue beside it. Of all bell rests, a day is deducted only when you rest at a Crane Bell and its memory plays. After you return to play, the message “Days Remaining: 65” appears to confirm the loss. Resting there again won’t trigger a memory or display a notice, and the count remains 65. Ordinary bell rests and Traverse produce no notice either.

Why Crane Bells are worth a day: memories and clues

The tutorial card describes the reward for resting: Soul experiences an earlier memory and reveals Zuo Shang’s residual memories in the Discordance. These memories serve as clues, and collecting every one is required to uncover the truth.

Every Crane Bell memory gives you a piece of Soul’s history with Zuo Shang, and every memory costs a day you can’t get back.
