Death in Phantom Blade Zero comes early. In Chapter 1, right after the first climb up the rock face with white scratch marks, a cutscene plays. Soul says “This place has been overrun by the Transcended.” and a masked brute with a cleaver drops onto the ledge. If you make that climb on low health, the fight can end fast. What follows depends on which difficulty you’re playing.

Quick answer: On the normal difficulties you get a black DEAD screen, then respawn with full HP and refilled Medicine. In 66 Days mode, each death also costs one day and assigns a new Buff Level.
Phantom Blade Zero death screen: Normal difficulties vs 66 Days
On the standard difficulty settings, PATHBREAKER included, dying brings up a sparse display: red brush calligraphy against black, with “DEAD” below. There is no counter, Buff Level entry, or menu.

The 66 Days death screen carries more information. It shows your Days Remaining and a “Buff Level” line, along with this message: “All Heart Damage has been restored, but time has permanently advanced by” one day.
| Death screen element | Normal difficulties | 66 Days |
|---|---|---|
| “DEAD” with red calligraphy | Yes | — |
| Days Remaining | No | Yes |
| Buff Level line | No | Yes |
| Time advanced message | No | Yes, by one day |
Where you respawn and what you get back
If you die before touching any bell, Soul respawns at the start of Chapter 1, back where Soul wakes below the waterfall. That includes a death to the masked brute after the first climb.
Respawning resets your core resources:
- HP is full again.
- The Medicine gourd is refilled to 2 of 2 uses.
Touching a bell replenishes HP and Medicine, as the prompt says: “Touch the Bell to restore HP and Medicine.” The first bell you encounter in Chapter 1 bears the name “The Beginning”.
Keeping Sha-Chi Essence through death
Sha-Chi Essence is the resource Power Surge spends. An Ability Training node reads “Retain Sha-Chi Essence upon death.”
How dying works in 66 Days mode
66 Days isn’t available from the start. The game describes it like this: “Same difficulty as ‘Hellwalker,’ but deaths are limited to 66 times. Unlocked after completing the game on any other difficulty.”
Every death in this mode costs exactly one day. Your Heart Damage is restored, but the day doesn’t come back. Each death also sets a Buff Level, which shows one of four effects:
- “Attack +10%”
- “Attack -10%”
- “Guard Break +10%”
- “Guard Break -10%”
Your Buff Level stays active until you die again in that mode. The new death effect takes its place, so the effects never accumulate.
When the days run out, the run ends with “Death’s End: Lost to the Wulin”.
The Days Remaining counter on normal difficulties
The 66-day tally is visible even outside 66 Days mode. On PATHBREAKER, the lower-right corner of the Chapter 1 card, “AGAINST THE FLOW / Follow the path upstream”, displays “Days Remaining: 66”.

The number comes from the story. In the prologue, the Flesh Sculptor’s Tainted Heart comes with a warning: “Venom will keep your heart beating… but in sixty-six days, it will claim your life.” In 66 Days mode, that deadline becomes your death limit.
