Yuzan, the Musician Puppet, in the intro scene, Phantom Blade Zero

In Phantom Blade Zero, Yuzan is a fair-skinned puppet with flowing red hair who performs on a pipa. She is the Chapter 1 boss concealed beneath the Village of Lu, sitting far inside the caves reached during the main quest HEARTLESS REMNANTS. The closest bell is nearby, but the battle is lengthy.

Quick answer: Find Yuzan in the caves beneath the well during Heartless Remnants, beyond the Beneath the Well bell. Entering the muddy basin below the scaffolding triggers her intro and begins the battle.

Where Yuzan is

Her name bar displays “Yuzan, No. 3 Musician Puppet”. The battle takes place in a broad dirt yard in the caves reached through the well during HEARTLESS REMNANTS. A crane statue occupies the center, with red-lit shrines and gates around the perimeter.

How to reach Yuzan

Before continuing, rest at the Beneath the Well bell. It is the nearest bell to Yuzan, and each time you are defeated, you return to it.
Keep walking past the bell. The path runs deeper into the caves and passes a small shrine lit by candles.

Follow the path until it opens into a large cavern hung with red lanterns.

Continue downhill until you reach a muddy basin beneath high timber scaffolding. It lies about 75 m from the bell.

The opening scene begins when you walk onto the basin floor. Soul is taken to Yuzan’s arena, where Yuzan sits holding her pipa. Soul wonders whether she is the Chord, and Yuzan describes herself as a faulty vessel.

The fight begins as soon as the scene ends, so be ready to move when control returns.

Yuzan fight: health, attacks and the instant-kill orb

Yuzan has 52,100 HP on PATHBREAKER and WAYFARER alike. She relies primarily on ranged pipa attacks. You can evade most of her thrown blades and parry her pipa blows at close range.

Blue crescent blades (from a blue swirl)About 90 HP eachDodge

The red blades are her heaviest hits.

The blue blades do less damage but come out more often than anything else she throws.

Watch especially for the dark orb attack. Yuzan may draw Soul toward the arena’s center as small teal orbs collect, before a large dark teal sphere shuts around him. Being caught inside ends the attempt immediately, regardless of your remaining health. Keep moving, and escape as soon as the orbs show up.

The battle can take a while. During five and a half minutes on WAYFARER, her HP fell from 52,100 to 43,830, about one-sixth of her total. Soul had 1,402 max HP, lost roughly 3,000 HP over that period, and needed healing gourds.

If you fall, you return to the Beneath the Well bell, and your Remnant Dust stays with you.

Yuzan rewards and the Puppet Testing Grounds bell

Defeating Yuzan awards the HEARTREND PIPA, an Artifice Phantom Edge with 276 Damage and 234 Guard Break; it shoots Blue and Red Sonic Blades. The central crane statue changes into the Puppet Testing Grounds bell.

Beyond the arena’s far side, a workshop for puppets glows red and is packed with looms and red threads. Three pickups are inside.
