Quick answer: The Survivors’ Courtyard bell sits under a dead tree behind a double wooden gate, below Sect Leader He’s hall in the Village of Lu. You reach it with a log mantle, a rope slide, and the gate.

Where the Survivors’ Courtyard bell is

In Chapter 1 of Phantom Blade Zero, find the bell in the Village of Lu courtyard enclosed by walls, beyond and below Sect Leader He’s hall. A high, double-leaf wooden gate seals the entrance. Within the courtyard, a large dead tree rises above a bell cross; red candles and little stone statues of children sit at its foot.

How to reach the Survivors’ Courtyard bell

The route starts at the Engine Giant Remains bell. A pack of puppets stands between you and the courtyard gate, so prepare before you set off.

Rest at the Engine Giant Remains bell to refill your healing gourds, and bring upgraded weapons if you have them.
Walk from the bell through the red hall to Sect Leader He’s room. Find the crate wall tied with red thread.
Press Space at the red-thread crate wall. Soul slides down to a plank landing.
Drop from the plank landing into the courtyard. Large crates form a barrier directly ahead. They are indestructible, so attacking them will get you nowhere.
On the crates’ right, find a moss-covered fallen log propped against the wall, marked with a “Space” prompt.

Press Space to have Soul climb over and land on the far side of the crate barrier.

Keep going for about 30 m until you reach the cliff edge. A rope runs off the edge down toward the village roofs, with a “Space” prompt on it.

Press Space, and Soul rides the rope a long way down and across.

A plank wall streaked with white beside the fence has a “Space” prompt too. Using it for a wall-run takes you back onto the roof; use it to retrace your route, not to proceed.

Get past the puppet pack waiting between the drop and the gate, about 16 to 30 m short of the bell. The next section covers what you are up against.

Soul announces that he is a nameless wanderer seeking the smuggler’s tunnel into Pangzhen. The gate opens, revealing a robed survivor inside.

Walk to the dead tree and press E at the bell cross to ring it. The Wailing Scholar sits by the tree, grieving someone he has lost.

The puppet pack outside the Survivors’ Courtyard gate

Six puppets hold the open ground in front of the gate. They are led by a Swordshield Puppet carrying a round shield and a sword. They attack together, not one at a time.

On PATHBREAKER, the default difficulty, going in without healing gourds is rough. After roughly a minute facing the group, Soul can drop from 1,349 max HP to 221 HP. The Swordshield Puppet, meanwhile, is still at 7,840 of 7,973 HP; the Village Elders and Village Beauty have only taken some damage, and the Mad Scholar and Simple Brother remain unharmed. Even on WAYFARER, starting at full health with three healing gourds, Soul holds out for only about two minutes.

A fall returns you to the Engine Giant Remains bell. Your Remnant Dust is unchanged, while every member of the pack is restored to full strength.

Before leaving, inspect the low stone wall a short distance from the bell tree. A purple glint marked with an E prompt indicates the pickup. Collect it to receive a Weapon Reforge Talisman; the on-screen name is “Weapon Reforge Talisman + 1”.
