Spear disciples in the Order's training hall in Pangzhen, Phantom Blade Zero

Quick answer: Finish The Seven-stars Formation, then talk to the Purple-Robed “Wolf” Leader in the Order’s Tavern training hall in Pangzhen. Free three of the six Mandate masters while they kneel and collect their Memory Flowers for Hero’s Courage.

The Undying Heroic Spirit is one of the Tales side quests in Phantom Blade Zero. Its banner reads “Should heaven fall, I will rise. Should earth break, I will stand”. You track down Mandate masters broken by Perfect Transcension and give them a proper end.

How to start The Undying Heroic Spirit

The opening objective reads “Meet the Seven-star Formation leader, then speak with Wolf Leader at the Order’s Tavern”. The quest giver is the Purple-Robed “Wolf” Leader, who stands with two spearmen in the training hall of the Order’s Tavern in Pangzhen.

Ring the Myst’s Tavern bell for the first time; the Wolf Leader appears only afterward, about 35 metres away. If you haven’t reached the bell yet, follow these instructions for entering the Order’s underground tavern.

Finish The Seven-stars Formation, the Memory Flower quest in the Mandate Encampment where you deal with the Seven-Stars disciples. It sits alongside the rest of the quests and side quests in Phantom Blade Zero. Speak to the Wolf Leader before this and he only explains the Mandate’s colors: disciples in white, captains in blue, and purple for himself as head of the Wolf Division.
Return to the Wolf Leader once the Seven-stars Formation is done. Soul tells him the seven were given an honorable end, and he responds by handing over a clouded piece of jade that will lead Soul to the masters who still have fight left in them.

The jade arrives as Shattered “Hero’s Courage”. Its card reads:

A fragment of jade known as “Hero’s Courage”, now somewhat clouded.

Many believe jade possesses a spirit of its own, growing ever purer when nurtured by loyalty, courage, righteousness, and compassion.

Shattered

You’ll know the quest is running when the objective updates to “Free the struggling masters of the Mandate, and honor their undying spirit”.

Where the six masters are

Perfect Transcension has taken control of six Mandate masters. They come in three forms: twin-blade swordsmen in purple robes, spear guards in purple robes, and Baishan guards. Their titles indicate their state; examples include Agonized Twinblade Swordsman, Resolute Purple-Robed Guard, and Unyielding Baishan Guard. Distances are measured from the nearest bell. For a full bell directory, see Phantom Blade Zero bells and decide where to start.

Mandate Encampment (four masters)

Each of these four has its own quest marker on the map.

  • Master 1: Find a twin-blade swordsman in purple robes roughly 30 metres away from the Mass Grave bell.
  • Master 2: A spear guard in purple robes is located roughly 30 metres from the Main Encampment Gate bell.
  • Master 3: The most distant from a bell is a purple-robed spear guard, around 170 metres from the Three Towers bell.
  • Master 4: a Baishan guard, about 60 metres from the Path of the Baishan’s Fall bell.

Pangzhen backstreet (two masters)

  • Master 5: Far below the Pangzhen Slums bell, about 40 metres away, you’ll find a purple-robed twin-blade swordsman.
  • Master 6: a Baishan guard between the Narrow Alley Residence 2nd Floor and Pond of Fading Song bells, roughly 170 to 200 metres from each.

Both Pangzhen targets are marked on the Pangzhen interactive map.

How to free a master

At first, each master fights you instead of turning against the Mandate. Partway into combat, it kneels and pleads with Soul to release it from its misery. Be quick: it stays down only briefly, and you receive a Memory Flower only by killing the master while it remains kneeling. Finishing moves are covered in the guide to executions in Phantom Blade Zero.

Interact with the Memory Flower to watch that master’s memory and collect it. These flowers belong to the wider set of Memory Flowers in Phantom Blade Zero.

Already beat some of these masters before talking to the Wolf Leader? Their flowers stay put. Without the quest active, a flower only gives a short glimpse, so go back to it once you’re holding the shattered jade.

Reward: Hero’s Courage

Collect any three of the six Memory Flowers and the quest completes. The game takes the shattered jade and gives you Hero’s Courage in its place. The remaining three masters are optional. The new card reads:

A jade pendant named the Hero’s Courage. Filled with the memories of heroes who remained true to their hearts, it still shines with luster.

Though the Maskwalkers and Perfect Transcension have broken countless practitioners of the Mandate, so long as the deviant path endures and the Wulin knows no peace, there will always be those who walk through fire for it. Their identities may differ, and their reasons may vary, but that hero spirit, unbowed by a corrupt world, is always the same.

Hero’s Courage is a Soul Tempering material, used to Soul Temper the Swordsman’s Summons. The process itself is covered in the guide to Soul Tempering in Phantom Blade Zero.
