Quick answer: Old Wooden Comb comes from Old Man Gen’s quest The Journey Home, once you bring him the Dusty Old Wooden Comb from his wife in the Pangzhen backstreet. It Soul Tempers the War Wagon.
Where to get Old Wooden Comb
Old Wooden Comb is the reward for the tale The Journey Home in Phantom Blade Zero. It is a Soul Tempering material, and you earn it by delivering a different item first: the Dusty Old Wooden Comb.
Visit Old Man Gen’s home in the Pangzhen backstreets, marked by the Old Man Gen’s House bell. Inside, take the Dusty Old Wooden Comb from his wife. Bring it to Old Man Gen at the Village of Lu Gate and give it to him. This finishes the tale and rewards you with Old Wooden Comb.
The Journey Home can fail before you reach that handover. The conditions are covered in the full walkthrough for The Journey Home.
Old Wooden Comb item card
The item card reads:
Many years ago, when both of them were still young, Old Man Gen made this comb for his wife.
A lifetime of bickering. That temper of hers had worn Old Man Gen down at last. For the twentieth-odd time, he walked out of town to get some peace. Who could have known it would be their final farewell? With his wife dead, there was no one left to bicker with him… Hollowed out, Old Man Gen handed everything to the man in black who had helped him. Let that be the end of it.
“Old woman, I’m coming to find you. I’m coming to pester you again!”
Its effect line reads: “Used to Soul Temper the War Wagon.”
What Old Wooden Comb does
In Pangzhen, Myst performs Soul Tempering at the Order’s underground tavern. For Soul Tempering a weapon, you need two things:
- 5,000 Remnant Dust
- Old Wooden Comb
Tempering the War Wagon with the comb grants the upgrade Free Rein. Its effect reads: “Increases damage dealt based on the distance War Wagon travels, up to 50%. Distance traveled resets after hitting an enemy.”
