GTA 6 Physical Map: What’s Actually Inside the Code-in-Box Edition

Rockstar has confirmed a disc-free box for Grand Theft Auto VI, but a printed Leonida map has not been ruled out.

Rockstar has confirmed a disc-free box for Grand Theft Auto VI, but a printed Leonida map has not been ruled out.

Buying a boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto VI no longer means walking out with a disc, which has left longtime fans asking about the one extra that has come to define a Rockstar release. For years, opening a new Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead game meant unfolding a large printed map of the world you were about to explore. With GTA 6 shifting to a code-in-box format, the fate of that fold-out paper map is the open question.

Quick answer: Rockstar has not confirmed that a printed map of Leonida or Vice City will ship inside the GTA 6 box. The physical edition is confirmed to contain only a download code, with no disc. Whether a fold-out map is included alongside that code remains unannounced.

What is confirmed inside the GTA 6 physical box

The retail version of Grand Theft Auto VI is a “code-in-box” release. You pay for a physical product, but the case holds a redemption card rather than a Blu-ray disc. The game data itself does not exist on any media in the box. You redeem the code through your platform’s store and download the full game.

This applies to every version. Both the Standard Edition and the Ultimate Edition follow the same format, so neither one comes with a playable disc. After redemption, the game appears in your library and downloads like any digital purchase. Because the code is one-time use, a redeemed card cannot be resold or traded in, and a used code from an unofficial reseller is worthless.

Rockstar’s stated reason for skipping the disc ties back to leaks. Retail copies have reached buyers ahead of launch in the past, leading to early streams and spoilers. A box that only holds a code removes that risk, since nobody can install the game until downloads are authorized. It also closes off the used-disc resale market, which matters for a launch this size.

Will GTA 6 include a printed Leonida map?

There is no official word that a paper map ships with the GTA 6 box. What works in fans’ favor is Rockstar’s recent track record. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 came with a fold-out map tucked inside the case, treated by many as a collectible in its own right.

The difference this time is the disc itself. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped with both a disc and a printed map. GTA 6 is the first Rockstar flagship sold with only a printed code inside. That raises a practical detail nobody has confirmed yet. The code could be printed on a small insert, on a miniature poster, or even on a full fold-out map of the State of Leonida or Vice City. None of those options have been ruled in or out.

Note: If you mainly want the map as a keepsake rather than for actual navigation, the boxed edition is the only retail product where one could plausibly appear. Functionally, the game you install is identical to a direct digital purchase, so a map would be the box’s main physical draw.

What the Leonida map actually covers

Whether or not it ends up on paper, the world you are mapping is the State of Leonida, a fictional take on Florida built around a modern-day Vice City. The map is set after the events of GTA V and is roughly twice the size of the GTA V map, mixing dense city blocks with smaller towns, swamps, and forests.

RegionReal-world inspiration
Vice City (Vice-Dale County)Miami / Miami-Dade County
Leonida KeysFlorida Keys
GrassriversThe Everglades
Port Gellhorn (Kelly County)Panama City
Ambrosia (Ambrosia County)Hendry County area
Mount Kalaga National ParkNorthern backwoods and canyons

The starting apartment for protagonists Jason and Lucia sits in the Leonida Keys, as shown in the second trailer. You can switch between the two characters between missions, and the story follows a chapter-based structure closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than the free-flow mission choice of GTA V.

If no official paper map arrives, fan-built tools are filling the gap. A community-maintained interactive map at map.stateofleonida.net plots more than 1,600 markers for roads, bridges, beaches, and businesses, triangulated from trailers and screenshots. It carries a real margin of error and will keep changing until release.

How to redeem the GTA 6 code from the box

On PS5, open the PlayStation Store, select your account icon, then choose “Redeem Codes.” On Xbox Series X|S, open the Store, expand the sidebar, and select “Redeem.”
Enter the code exactly as printed on the card inside the box. Each code can only be redeemed once, so do not share it before you use it.
Once the code is accepted, the game appears in your library. From preload day onward you can download and install it, which confirms the redemption worked. If the code is rejected, the most common cause is a typo or a code that has already been used, which is the risk with copies bought from unofficial resellers.

For now, the boxed edition is best understood as a digital license in a retail case. A fold-out Leonida map would fit Rockstar’s recent habits and would be the one tangible perk left in the box, but until the studio says so directly, the only thing guaranteed inside is the download code. If a real disc edition ever materializes, reports have pointed to a possible later release, though nothing of that kind has been confirmed.
