The Rope Dart turns Edward Kenway into a silent hunter who can snatch guards off the ground and leave them dangling from a branch or beam. In Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, you get this tool far earlier than in the 2013 release, so hanging enemies becomes a stealth option almost as soon as the Jackdaw sets sail. The key is your position relative to the target and one button press.
Quick answer: Stand on a high perch directly over an enemy until the Hang prompt appears, then press RB (default controller layout). Edward spears the guard and ropes him up, killing him while he hangs.

Unlock the Rope Dart first
You cannot hang anyone until the Rope Dart is in your kit, and you receive it automatically during the main story. James Kidd hands it to Edward in Sequence Three, during the mission Sugarcane and its Yields. This comes right after Raise the Black Flag, roughly three to four hours into the campaign once the Jackdaw is running and you have started building a crew.
The handover happens in the opening cutscene, as the pair sit by a bonfire and talk about robbing a plantation. Once you leave the campfire, follow James Kidd and an on-screen prompt walks you through the basic controls on a group of Redcoats standing nearby.

Add to Google Preferences →How to hang a target from a perch
Hanging only works from a high spot that sits above your target. If you are on the same level as the guard, the game gives you the pull option instead, not the hang.
You know it worked when the enemy is lifted off the ground and left suspended, with a visible length of rope beside the body. Nearby guards who spot the hanging corpse become confused rather than immediately alerted to you, which keeps your position hidden.

Why the hang sometimes fails to trigger
If the Hang prompt never shows up, the problem is almost always your placement. Two conditions have to be met before the move activates.
- You must be on a raised perch, not standing at ground level with the target.
- The target has to be positioned below you and within range, so the rope can reach down and lift the body.
Reposition along the branch or beam until the prompt swaps from a pull to a hang, then press the button.
The Rope Dart’s combat pull
Hanging is the stealth use, but the Rope Dart has a second job during open fights. Instead of climbing above a target, you can drag one toward you from a distance.
Press Right Trigger + B to fire the dart at a highlighted enemy and reel him in. This closes the gap, throws the guard off balance, and leaves him open to a Takedown or Assassination. It is also a fast way to interrupt an enemy who is lining up a gunshot, giving you the opening to move in for the kill.
| Use | Position needed | Default input |
|---|---|---|
| Hang from a perch | High spot above the target | RB |
| Pull in combat | Same level as the target | Right Trigger + B |
Cooldown and the Brass Bird Trinket
The Rope Dart runs on a cooldown, so you cannot chain hangs or pulls back to back. You need to wait between uses before the option becomes available again.
If you own the Deluxe Edition, the Master Assassin Character Pack includes a golden Brass Bird Trinket. Equipping it cuts the Rope Dart’s cooldown by a large amount, which lets you use both the hang and the pull more often across a stealth run or a drawn-out fight.
With the Rope Dart in hand this early, hanging guards from trees and rooftops becomes a reliable way to thin out a garrison before anyone notices you are there. Pick your perch, wait for the Hang prompt, and the rest is one press away.
