Overrun and Outnumbered Walkthrough in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Free all nine captured Assassins with the Blowdart, avoid combat, and reach James Kidd to close out the mission.

Free all nine captured Assassins with the Blowdart, avoid combat, and reach James Kidd to close out the mission.

Overrun and Outnumbered begins the moment Edward and James Kidd climb back out of the Mayan hideout and find the Templars, backed by British soldiers, storming the island of Tulum. The Assassins there have been rounded up and are held at gunpoint, so this stretch of Sequence 4 is built entirely around stealth. Rush in and the guards execute their prisoners, which fails the objective on the spot.

Quick answer: Use the Blowdart’s Sleep Dart to knock out the guards holding each group, dispatch them quietly, and free all nine captured Assassins without triggering open combat. Once every prisoner is loose, follow the marker to James Kidd and Ah Tabai to end the mission.

How Overrun and Outnumbered starts and what you get

The mission triggers automatically after you finish exploring the ancient temple and learn the Sage’s identity. As you surface, James Kidd hands Edward a new tool, the Blowdart, which is the key to the whole sequence. It carries two ammo types, and knowing the difference matters for a clean run.

Ammo typeWhat it does
Sleep DartPuts a guard to sleep silently so you can approach and dispatch him without alerting the group
Berserk DartTurns a target hostile toward nearby soldiers, useful for thinning a cluster of guards

Your goal is to release a total of nine Assassins spread across the ruins, the village, and the higher settlements. The Sleep Dart handles almost every encounter, so lead with it and only close in once a guard is down.

Free all nine prisoners without starting a fight

Take out the first guard ahead of you with a Sleep Dart. Kidd will move in and finish him, giving you a clear read on how the stealth loop works for the rest of the mission.

Turn left to find the first batch of prisoners, but do not engage the guards directly or they will kill the captives. Instead, head into the temple on your left and put both guards inside to sleep with darts. A third soldier approaches from the left, and if you are fast you can stealth assassinate him. Finish off the sleeping guards, then release this first group.
Continue left to a short set of stairs where a single guard watches over one prisoner. Hide in the bushes, quietly take down the soldier, and free the captive.

Just ahead, two riflemen are holding another group. Sleep Dart both of them, but watch for a soldier behind the pair who comes to investigate. Drop that soldier first, then deal with the two you put to sleep before freeing the prisoners.
Head up the stairs to your right and eliminate the two guards standing near the cliff. A careful double assassination clears both at once.
Drop down onto the ruins and follow Kidd. He takes out one guard, and you can assassinate the second if you move quickly. If you miss the window, Kidd handles it himself.
The next prisoner is in the village. A sniper sits on the nearby tower, so remove him first. Use the surrounding bushes to slip up on the two guards in the village and take them down before releasing the captive.

Return to the watchtower and look toward the temple ruins. Two prisoners are held there by several British troops, including a Guard Captain. Sleep Dart the first two soldiers, move closer, then Sleep Dart the Captain and the remaining guard. Handling it this way lets you avoid a direct clash with the Captain, who can be tough depending on your difficulty. Take them out and free both prisoners.
Follow the path under the arched tree, where a brute is waiting. Kill him, then take the small set of steps up on your right and turn left to find two guards holding a prisoner. Clear both to release the captive.
Go back to the spot where you killed the brute and turn right toward a settlement of huts and guards set high above. Keep moving straight until you reach the palm leaves on the ground, which mark a wall you can climb.

At the top, take down the British soldier by the ledge and Sleep Dart the two soldiers standing near Adewale. Finish them and free your ally to complete the final rescue.

Return to James Kidd to finish the mission

With every prisoner freed, follow the objective marker to James Kidd and Ah Tabai. You watch the British forces withdraw from the shores of Tulum. After a short objective, Kidd introduces Edward to the contract system the Assassins run across the Caribbean, then leads you into the inner sanctum of the Mayan Temple and points out a particular sealed door.

You know the mission is over once Kidd shows you that door in the temple’s inner sanctum. As in the original game, it hides the Mayan Armor, but the seal only opens after you collect the Mayan Stones scattered around the Caribbean. Reaching this point ends Overrun and Outnumbered.

What completing this mission unlocks

Finishing Overrun and Outnumbered opens the Mayan Mysteries side quest, based out of Tulum, Conttoyor. That quest asks you to gather all 16 Mayan stelae and solve their puzzles to break the seal in Tulum, which ties directly back to the door Kidd shows you at the end. If you plan to chase the Mayan Armor, this is the mission that sets that whole thread in motion.
