Quick answer: Two story quests decide the ending. Finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and win all five Lóng Pillar trials (Bloodline Awakening) before facing Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil, for the Final Battle ending.

What decides the ending

Phantom Blade Zero has three endings, and two quests on the Quests > Story tab pick between them: SECRETS AT THE HEART OF THE LAKE and BLOODLINE AWAKENING. Both stay in the Story list for a long stretch of the game, which makes them easy to forget about while the main story keeps moving.

Your ending is locked in when the battle against Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil starts. Anything you completed before entering that fight determines the outcome, making it your cutoff point. Meng Hua appears after Leng Tu on every route.

How to finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

You need this quest for either the Lóng’s Roar or Final Battle ending. Leave it unfinished, and the result will be Annihilation regardless of your other progress.

In the Village of Lu, find Firefly’s Memory Flower, a bed of blue flowers beside a dry-stone wall just above the arena where you fight Zhuo Bi, the Gatekeeper. Press E on the flowers to collect the petal. A banner opens SECRETS AT THE HEART OF THE LAKE with the objective “Find Firefly’s Memory Flowers”. The lake quest start guide covers this step in detail.

Select the quest in Quests > Story and follow its markers around the lake in the Village of Lu. The trail ends at the lake ritual with a fight against The High Elder, and defeating him completes the quest.

Afterward, a cutscene carries Soul to the Realm of Mirage. Speak with Inanis there to receive the VIOLET BLOSSOM.

Don’t skip the conversation with Inanis. It is part of what the Lóng’s Roar and Final Battle endings require, not optional flavor.

How to win all five Lóng Pillar trials (Bloodline Awakening)

Lóng Pillars take the form of enormous dragon statues. In the Crimson Forest, the Mirrorwood Lóng Pillar bell is inside a cave lit red. Bloodline Awakening lists these objectives:

  • “Find all five Lóng Pillars and complete their trials”
  • “Return to the Lóng Pillar after new discoveries”
  • “Return to the Lóng Pillar to investigate”

Early in the game, a pillar only offers a “Continue” / “Leave” choice. Soul senses an enormous sealed power inside that seems connected to his visions, and nothing else happens. That’s the “return after new discoveries” stage, so come back later.

Once a pillar’s trial is open, touching it starts a duel with a masked fighter of the Bastion of Mo. You can take the pillars in any order, and the game counts your wins from one to five. The fifth duel is against Mo Yuan, Leader of the Bastion of Mo.

The fifth win also completes Bloodline Awakening, which is how you know the Final Battle requirement on this side is met.

Point of no return: the bridge in the Pangzhen backstreet

In the Pangzhen backstreet, a bridge about 120 metres from the Green Serpent House bell leads on to the Mirage Estate. If Secrets at the Heart of the Lake isn’t done when you reach it, Inanis stops you, warning that something important is still unfinished and that pushing ahead could bring disaster. You get two options:

  • “There’s still unfinished business. Return later.” Selecting this option sends Soul back without changing anything.
  • “No turning back now. Forward it is!” moves the story on to the Mirage Estate.

Proceeding also makes these Crimson Forest bells inaccessible: Parting Mists, Mirrorwood Depths, Threadbound Great Tree, Burial Grounds and the Sha-Chi Tower bells. Finish any remaining Crimson Forest tasks before moving on. When the lake quest is complete, no warning appears; cross the bridge to continue directly.

How each ending plays out

FINAL BATTLE

With both quests done before Leng Tu, you fight Leng Tu and then Meng Hua (the bosses list covers every fight). Beating Meng Hua here unlocks the achievement “All Dreams Must End”. Zuo Shang comes next, and when he falls he transforms, starting a second fight against ZUO SHANG, THE TRUE LÓNG. It ends with a button-prompt finisher.

The ending text reads: “The Phantom World was saved from the brink of collapse. The truth was uncovered, and the “Heart” was found.” The achievement “With Heart and Blood” unlocks, and the RADIANT HEART is part of the reward.

LÓNG’S ROAR

With the lake quest and the Inanis talk done but not all five pillar trials, you fight Leng Tu and Meng Hua (“All Dreams Must End” still unlocks), then Zuo Shang. The ending plays when he falls, with no transformation. The ending text reads: “With Meng Hua defeated, the Phantom World endures. Yet mysteries still await resolution, and the Radiant Heart remains lost. This life still hangs in the balance.”

ANNIHILATION

Reach Leng Tu without finishing Secrets at the Heart of the Lake and the ending plays as soon as Meng Hua dies. There’s no Zuo Shang fight. The ending text reads: “Chaos could not be stopped. The Phantom World was consumed by an endless tide of Blight”

Hellwalker and New Game+

Any of the three endings counts as completing the game. The start menu notes: “Hellwalker difficulty becomes available in New Game+ after completing the game once on Wayfarer or Pathbreaker difficulty”. The difficulty modes guide explains each setting.
