Flame Captain is a Secret-rarity unit in Universal Tower Defense Z built around consistent burn damage. It is modeled on Genryusai Yamamoto from Bleach, takes a Ground placement slot, and costs 1,400 Yen to spawn. You earn it from the Reaper City Raid rather than the summon banner, and a single evolution turns it into Flame Captain (Ember) with an extra set of passives and an Active Ability.

Quick answer: Clear Act 5 of the Reaper City Raid (or Boss Rush) repeatedly until you hit the pity requirement, and Flame Captain drops as a reward. It arrives directly in your unit collection once pity is met.

How to get Flame Captain in the Reaper City Raid

Flame Captain comes from the Reaper City Raid, a stage added in Update 4.0 that runs harder than the other Raids in the game. Two spots inside it can grant the unit: Act 5 and Boss Rush. You reach these near the end of the Raid, so you need to work through the earlier content first.

Clear Acts 1 through 4 of the Reaper City Raid in order. Act 5 stays locked until all four earlier Acts are finished.
Complete Act 5. Finishing it also unlocks the Boss Rush level, giving you a second farming route toward the unit.
Replay Act 5 (and Boss Rush) until you reach the pity threshold. Flame Captain is awarded once you have cleared the stage enough times, so keep running it. You can invite friends to help clear Raid levels faster.

Bring units that carry the Peroxide tag. These units gain a 100% damage buff inside Reaper City Raids, which cuts down clear times. Strong picks include The Almighty King, Visionary (Unrivaled), and Moonless Sky.

You will know it worked when Flame Captain appears in your unit collection as a reward after a qualifying Act 5 or Boss Rush clear. Runs that do not credit toward pity, or that end before the reward triggers, are the main reason players do not receive the unit right away.

Evolution materials for Flame Captain (Ember)

Flame Captain evolves into Flame Captain (Ember). Open the Evolutions menu, select the unit, gather the items below, then press the Evolve! button.

Fragments come from Challenges, the Virtual Merchant, and the Merchant. Both merchants restock a limited amount each day, so plan several days of buying if you are short.

The Ashen Sword is the gated piece. Buy it from the Soul Reaper Raid Shop for 300 Reaper Badges. You earn those badges by completing Acts in the Reaper City Raid, so the same runs that grind toward the unit also feed its evolution.

Flame Captain (Ember) passive abilities

What separates Flame Captain (Ember) from other burn units like Spade and Revolutionary Captain is how reliably it keeps enemies on fire. It stacks burn ticks, re-applies them the moment they expire, and punishes anything already burning. Because the whole kit scales on damage-over-time, gear that raises DoT works best, with the Almighty Relic Set as the preferred choice.

Oldest Fire

  • On attack, applies Burn for 55% Damage over 6 ticks.
  • When that Burn expires, it is re-applied for 125% Damage over 6 ticks.

From Flesh to Ashes

  • When it hits an enemy that is already Burning, it removes the Burn and deals +75% Damage.
  • Executes enemies below 5% Health.

One Thousand Year Captain

  • Gains 5% Damage whenever an enemy drops under 50% Health in range, up to a 50% cap, on a 20-second cooldown.
  • When a boss enters range, applies Burn for 20% Damage over 4 ticks to every enemy on the map.

Hell’s South (Active Ability)

  • Unlocks only after the unit reaches its final upgrade.
  • Activates a Scorched Domain for 30 seconds.
  • Grants +500% Damage during the Domain.
  • Summons 18 Skeletons on the nearest path within range, each with Health equal to 25% Damage.
  • Fixed 200-second cooldown.

Once you have the base unit and enough Reaper Badges banked, the evolution is the natural next step, since Ember is where the burn reapplication, the execute threshold, and the Hell’s South Domain all come online. Keep running Reaper City Raid for both the pity reward and the badges, and prioritize DoT gear so the reapplied burns hit as hard as possible.
