Palworld 1.0 Best Melee Build: Skutlass Ignis Team and Passives

The five-Pal lineup, passive skills, and backup weapons that turn Skutlass Ignis into a self-buffing melee carry.

Melee combat in Palworld 1.0 gets its punch from one core trick. Skutlass Ignis becomes your actual weapon, and the other four Pals in your party stack player Attack, melee damage, defense, and stamina savings on top of it. The result is a close-range build that farms World Tree Holy Water, Ancient Relics, and other endgame drops that demand repeated fighting.

Quick answer: Field Skutlass Ignis, Pupperai, Warsect Terra, Gobfin, and Solenne. Activate Seared Fish Fillet to wield Skutlass Ignis as a katana, keep Pupperai’s Best Boy and Solenne’s Untainted Maiden running for the damage boost, and carry a Laser Sword plus Revival Potions for downtime.

The five-Pal melee team and what each slot does

Every Pal here covers a separate piece of melee combat. One supplies the weapon, one raises melee weapon damage, two push player Attack, and one keeps you alive while you stand next to the target. Because the roles do not overlap, you get the most out of five slots instead of doubling up on the same buff.

SlotPalRole
1Skutlass IgnisActive Pal and primary melee weapon
2PupperaiIncreases melee weapon damage
3Warsect TerraGenerates a defensive barrier
4GobfinAdds player Attack
5SolenneLargest player Attack bonus

Fully condensing each Pal to four stars gives the strongest Partner Skill values, but the build works before that. Start with the copies and condensation ranks you already own, then upgrade one slot at a time as more copies arrive.

Partner Skill values for each Pal

Skutlass Ignis is the weapon. Its Seared Fish Fillet skill lets you hold Skutlass Ignis as a katana for a limited time, replacing a normal weapon. At Partner Skill Level 5 it reaches 4,200 base power, compared with 3,900 base power for the standard Skutlass at the same level, so the Ignis variant edges out the base version for an optimized endgame setup.

Pupperai carries the biggest melee-specific boost through its Best Boy skill, which raises the damage of your melee weapons while it stays in the party. Best Boy does not stack, so a second Pupperai adds nothing. Solenne’s Untainted Maiden applies only when all five party members are different species, which this lineup already satisfies. Gobfin’s Angry Shark is the one buff here that still stacks, though the remaining slots are better spent on melee damage, defense, and Solenne’s larger bonus.

PalPartner SkillEffect at Level 5
Skutlass IgnisSeared Fish FilletWield as a katana; 4,200 base power
PupperaiBest Boy+35% melee weapon damage (10% uncondensed)
Warsect TerraFullmetal ShellBarrier after 5 melee hits within 9 seconds
GobfinAngry Shark+20% player Attack (stacks)
SolenneUntainted Maiden+80% player Attack with 5 different species (30% base)

Warsect Terra’s barrier fits the build naturally. Landing five melee hits inside nine seconds triggers Fullmetal Shell, and fast weapons like Skutlass Ignis reach that threshold quickly, so the shield stays up while you crowd bosses.

Best passive skills for Skutlass Ignis

Skutlass Ignis is the only Pal that stays out in combat, so it needs its own passive setup focused on survival and uptime. Defensive passives matter here because losing the active Pal removes your main weapon mid-fight.

PassiveEffect
VanguardPlayer Attack +10%
IdiosyncraticPal and player health regen +50%, Defense +25%, immunity to Poison and Burn
ImmortalityLife Steal +5%, Pal health regen +100%, Attack +15%
Diamond BodyDefense +30%, immunity to flinching and knockback

This mix keeps the active Pal healthy, blocks status damage, and removes flinch and knockback so combos are not interrupted. Staying uninterrupted means the Partner Skill stays available and you keep your weapon.

Passives for Pupperai, Warsect Terra, Gobfin, and Solenne

The four reserve Pals almost never leave their Pal Spheres, so their passives should improve you rather than their own combat stats. Prioritize buffs that transfer to the player.

PassivePlayer benefit
VanguardPlayer Attack +10%
Stronghold StrategistPlayer Defense +10%
Wellness WatcherPlayer stamina consumption -5%
IdiosyncraticPlayer health regen and Pal strengthening

Putting Wellness Watcher on all four reserve Pals frees up stamina, which leaves more in the bar for dodging large attacks while you fight at close range.

Weapons, accessories, and consumables

Skutlass Ignis cannot stay out forever, so carry a backup melee weapon for when Seared Fish Fillet is cooling down, or the Pal is incapacitated. Wear the highest-rarity armor you have and split your accessory slots between offense and defense.

ItemPurpose
Laser SwordBest backup for the endgame version; use during Skutlass downtime
KatanaAccessible backup before the Laser Sword
TerraprismaOptional; summons up to nine autonomous swords for extra hits
Wing PackMobility for closing gaps and escaping; consumes Wing Cells
Attack PendantPushes damage from Pupperai, Gobfin, Solenne, and Vanguard further
Defense PendantOffsets the chip damage of fighting beside enemies
Mammorest Curry+25% Attack for 600 seconds
Revival PotionsRestore an incapacitated Skutlass Ignis without returning to base

A Legendary Laser Sword is the strongest backup, but the build does not depend on owning that schematic. Lower-rarity Laser Swords, or any Katana, cover the gaps between Skutlass activations fine. Terraprisma adds damage around you but creates heavy visual clutter, so treat it as a choice rather than a requirement.

Pair an Attack Pendant with a Defense Pendant instead of stacking every slot for damage. Melee fighters absorb more unavoidable hits and get less time to react to attacks that land directly under a boss, so the extra defense pays off. Keep several Revival Potions in your inventory during farming runs, since one small timing mistake with the Partner Skill can drop Skutlass Ignis.

How to run the build in combat

Deploy Skutlass Ignis at the start of the fight and confirm the passive Partner Skills from your reserve Pals are active. This locks in the player Attack and melee damage bonuses before you engage.
Activate Seared Fish Fillet to wield Skutlass Ignis as a katana. Eating Mammorest Curry beforehand adds the +25% Attack window for tough encounters.
Stay aggressive and land five hits within nine seconds to trigger Warsect Terra’s Fullmetal Shell barrier. Keep striking to maintain the shield while you sit close to the target.
When Seared Fish Fillet runs out or Skutlass Ignis is put away, switch to the Laser Sword or Katana to keep pressure on until you can activate it again. Use the Wing Pack to reposition when a boss winds up a large attack.
If Skutlass Ignis becomes incapacitated, use a Revival Potion to return it to the fight without abandoning your route. This is what keeps repeated World Tree and Ancient Relic runs from stalling.

The build stays functional even without full four-star condensation. Missing copies only lower the buff values, not the core loop, so you can start farming with what you have and refine each slot over time.
