Anime Expeditions: Best Dark Mage (Sovereign) Build in Update 0.5

The trait, equipment, and form cycle that turn Judar into the top damage carry of the patch.

Dark Mage (Sovereign), the Mythic unit often called Judar, is the strongest damage carry added in Anime Expeditions Update 0.5. He costs ¥1,500 to place and clears story, farming, boss stages, and tournaments once built correctly. His entire value comes from one thing, and if you build around it he outperforms almost every other unit in the patch.

Quick answer: Roll the Unbound trait, equip Shinigami Sword and Magic Book, and keep him in Lightning form as long as possible. The Lightning field does the damage, so uptime in that form is the whole build.

How the Dark Mage form cycle works

Dark Mage runs a Magic Cycle passive. After every 8 regular attacks he swaps between two special attacks, and each form behaves very differently.

FormAttack shapeEffect
Ice Magic (Attack 1)Circle AoE, size 12Gains Freeze on attack; adds 1 Frostbite stack per enemy hit, up to 15 stacks
Lightning Magic (Attack 2)Cone AoE, size 55Summons an Arc of Lightning on the path in range; enemies touching it take 50% of his current damage every second

Ice form gives freeze control, which is handy but not why you play him. Lightning form is his real identity. The Arc of Lightning ticks for half of his damage stat every second across the path, so a strong Dark Mage becomes a sustained damage field rather than a single-target attacker.

Best trait: Unbound

Unbound is the trait you want. It increases damage by 350%, reduces SPA by 5%, and adds 10% range as a single-placement bonus. Since the Lightning field scales directly off his damage stat, the flat 350% damage boost feeds every tick of the Arc.

Unbound is a Mythic trait with a 0.1% roll chance, so it takes patience. Use the Trait Reroll circle in the lobby and spend Trait Crystals until it lands. Draconic and Forsaken can appear during rerolls, but neither matches Unbound for a damage-field unit like this one.

Equipment loadout

Two standard pieces cover both of his damage angles. His lightning orb can crit, and he counts as a magic unit, so Shinigami Sword and Magic Book both pull real weight.

SlotItemWhat it gives
StandardMagic Book+18.95% Magical DMG Dealt
StandardShinigami Sword+9.64% Critical Chance, +3.8% Damage, plus +0.89% damage per enemy in range (up to 15%)
UnitDark Scepter-3.8% SPA, +3.04% Range, and carries the Lightning Orbs and Ice Barrage passives

The Dark Scepter is his dedicated unit equipment and drops from the Villain Invasion event in Crow Hideout – Act 1 on Hard Mode. It has a 5% drop rate with a 1-in-20 pity. Farm it there if you want the SPA reduction and the built-in orb passives.

Keep him in Lightning form for consistent damage

If his damage feels inconsistent, the problem is almost always form uptime, not the unit. He is rotating out of Lightning form too fast and spending too long in Ice.

Adjust his targeting so he stays in Lightning form longer. The moment the Arc of Lightning is up and enemies are walking through it, he is doing his intended job. You will see the difference in kill speed on any stage with a long path or a chokepoint where enemies linger inside the field.

For reference, a fully leveled Dark Mage sits around 3.14k damage, 4.8s SPA, and 29.2 range at level 50 with a 3-star ascension. Maxed out in the Testing Zone, those numbers climb to roughly 22,874 damage, 4.4s SPA, and 34.6 range, which is why the 50%-per-second field hits so hard once he is built.

Where he fits in your team

Dark Mage belongs in the main DPS slot. Build him first, then fill the rest of the lineup with units that keep enemies inside his Lightning field. Control units like Megumi and Puppet stall waves so the Arc gets more ticks per enemy, which stacks well with his damage-over-time profile.

  • Pair him with a second damage unit such as Grimjaw or Itachi depending on whether you need crit output or shield breaking.
  • Add stall or control, then a buff support like Yuta or Forbidden Teacher to lift his magic damage further.
  • Unlike map-dependent picks, he performs the same across layouts, so he is the safest first investment this patch.

Lock in Unbound, run Shinigami Sword and Magic Book, and manage his form cycle so Lightning stays up. Do that and Dark Mage (Sovereign) will out-damage almost anything else you can bring into Update 0.5.
