Path of Exile: How to Turn Light Radius Into Damage

The Luminary Scion, a handful of uniques, and one Legion trick let a dead stat push real damage and Link buffs.

Light Radius normally does one thing in Path of Exile. It sets how far your character can see in low-light zones and how much of the map reveals doors and points of interest as you move. Increases to it are tiny, and once you are deleting packs with screen-wide damage, seeing the floor stops mattering. The stat only becomes worth building when an effect converts it into damage, applies it to your Link buffs, or ties it to Energy Shield instead of Life.

Quick answer: Run the Luminary Scion and take the Golden Glory passive so Light Radius increases boost Flame Link’s flat Fire damage, or equip Wreath of Phrecia so increases and reductions to Light Radius also apply to your damage. Both turn stacked Light Radius into an offensive number.

Why Light Radius is a dead stat by default

Base Light Radius controls visibility and map reveal, nothing else. Your radius also shrinks based on your current percentage of maximum Life, so being on Low Life makes dark areas very hard to read. Blind overrides the visual radius down to its minimum, though it does not change the numeric value the game uses for scaling. That last point matters once you start converting the stat into damage, because a Blind can wreck your view even while the underlying number stays high.

The plain increased Light Radius suffixes on helmets, weapons, and rings top out around 15 percent at high tiers, so they never move the needle on their own. Value comes only from effects that redirect Light Radius into something useful.

The Luminary Ascendancy is the cleanest modern payoff for the stat. Luminary turns a permanently hired Mercenary into your main damage dealer, and the Scion supports that ally with Links. Two of its passives do the heavy lifting here.

Take Oath of Fealty. It grants infinite Link duration, so you cast Flame Link once and keep it active, and it removes the death penalty if the Linked target dies. Flame Link itself hands the ally a large chunk of flat Fire damage plus extra Fire damage tied to your maximum Life.
Allocate Golden Glory, which sits right after Oath of Fealty. It makes increases and reductions to Light Radius also apply to your Link skill buffs. Stacking Light Radius now inflates the flat Fire damage your Mercenary receives, so the stat becomes an offensive multiplier instead of a map-reveal tool.
Grab the Blind Mastery. You can still be Blinded while running this setup, and a Blind collapses your effective vision, so the mastery keeps you from fighting half-blind. You confirm the loop is working when Flame Link’s granted Fire damage rises as you add Light Radius sources.

Note: because Flame Link’s bonus also scales off maximum Life, ordinary rare gear with Life, resistances, and Strength stays efficient. You are stacking Life and Light Radius together, not choosing between them.

Uniques that convert Light Radius into other stats

A short list of uniques weaponizes the stat directly. Each one either redirects Light Radius into damage, adds Fire damage based on how far your radius sits above base, or rebases the stat onto Energy Shield.

UniqueWhat it does with Light RadiusCatch
Wreath of Phrecia (Iron Circlet)Increases and reductions to Light Radius also apply to Damage, and to Area of Effect at 50% of their value; (15–25)% increased Light RadiusStarter helmet with no defenses and no way to upgrade it
Eclipse Solaris (Faun’s Horn Wand)Adds 2 to 5 Fire Damage to Attacks for every 1% your Light Radius is above base value; (15–20)% increased Light RadiusEarly-game wand with only about 40 base damage, weak for Uber and Pinnacle fights
Corona Solaris (Crystal Wand)Increases and reductions to Light Radius also apply to Accuracy RatingBest paired with builds that convert Accuracy into offense
Incandescent Heart (Saintly Chainmail)(20–30)% increased Light Radius and Light Radius is based on Energy Shield instead of LifeWants a build that keeps Energy Shield full, such as Chaos Inoculation with strong leech

Wreath of Phrecia is the textbook example, since it turns every Light Radius increase into a damage increase. Its problem is that it is a level 8 helmet with zero defensive stats, and it cannot be improved. Eclipse Solaris rewards pushing your radius well above base, but its low weapon damage makes it a leveling piece rather than an endgame carry.

Base Light Radius on Energy Shield for Low Life builds

Because the default radius drops with your Life percentage, Low Life and Chaos Inoculation characters struggle to see anything. Rebasing the stat onto Energy Shield fixes that. Incandescent Heart does it as a body armour, and an Energy Shield Mastery offers the same swap on the tree. There is also a crafting bench recipe that prints “Light Radius is based on Energy Shield instead of Life” onto a helmet or ring.

Move the “applies to Damage” line onto better gear

Wreath of Phrecia’s biggest weakness is that its damage conversion is locked to a defenseless helmet. The Legion rework changes that. Enshrouding Crystals let you transfer an inherent trait from one unique onto another. Pull “Increases and Reductions to Light Radius also apply to Damage” off Wreath of Phrecia and land it on a sturdier helmet such as Voll’s Vision, and the conversion travels with real defenses attached.

That single transfer is what makes a Light Radius build viable past the leveling stage. Without it, weaponizing the stat means wearing a naked circlet; with it, you keep the damage scaling while the helmet slot still gives you Life, resistances, or Armour.

Light Radius will always start life as the stat nobody wants, and the tiny percentage rolls on regular gear will never change that. The value sits entirely in the conversions. Golden Glory feeds it into Flame Link, Wreath of Phrecia feeds it into damage, Eclipse Solaris pays out for stacking it above base, and an Enshrouding Crystal frees that damage line from a fragile helmet. Build around one of those and the map-lighting stat finally earns a slot.
