Scrap Mechanic: How to Get Every Tool (1.0)

The starting kit, every Craftbot recipe, and the materials you need to unlock all the tools.

The starting kit, every Craftbot recipe, and the materials you need to unlock all the tools.

Tools are what let you build, connect, and fight in Scrap Mechanic. In your inventory, each one carries a yellow dot that marks it apart from ordinary blocks and parts. A few are handed to you the moment you start playing, and the rest are made at the Craftbot once you have the right materials.

Quick answer: The Handbook, Lift, and Sledgehammer are unlocked by default. Every other tool, including the Weld Tool, Connect Tool, Clay Gun, and all the potato and fire weapons, is crafted at the Craftbot using Metal Blocks, Scrap Metal Blocks, Component Kits, Circuit Boards, and Cable Rolls.

Tools you start with

Three tools are available from the beginning and need no crafting. The Handbook holds the reference material for building machines and crafting. The Lift lets you place creations that float freely instead of being fixed to the ground, and it can raise, lower, and flip creations back upright. The Sledgehammer pushes loose items around when you hit them.

The Sledgehammer and Lift are also the only two tools you can never drop from your inventory. Everything else can be dropped by hand. In Survival Mode, none of your tools are lost when you die, so you keep the full set through every raid and every mistake.

Craftbot recipes for every tool

The rest of the lineup is built at the Craftbot. The table below lists each craftable tool, the exact materials it consumes, and what it does. Gather the ingredients first, then queue the tool at the Craftbot.

ToolRecipeUse
Weld ToolMetal Block Level 2 (x10), Component Kit (x2)Welds creations together
Connect ToolScrap Metal Block (x5), Circuit Board (x2)Connects interactive parts
Clay GunMetal Block Level 2 (x50), Component Kit (x10), Cable Roll (x10)Builds using clay
Scrap Spud GunScrap Metal Block (x50), Component Kit (x2)Basic potato launcher
Spud GunMetal Block Level 1 (x50), Component Kit (x5)Fires a single potato shot
Spud ShotgunMetal Block Level 2 (x50), Component Kit (x10)Launches spuds in a spread
Spudling GunMetal Block Level 2 (x50), Component Kit (x10), Cable Roll (x10)Rapidly fires potatoes
Fire LauncherMetal Block Level 2 (x50), Component Kit (x10)Shoots fireballs in an arc

The Weld Tool and Connect Tool are the two you will want first. The Weld Tool joins loose creations together, and you can also fuse touching parts placed on the Lift. The Connect Tool wires interactive parts to one another, such as linking a gas engine to bearings or a thruster to a driver’s seat.

Weapon tools and what they do

Several tools double as weapons for clearing threats and defending your base. The Spud Gun fires one potato at a time and can break weaker materials like cardboard and glass. The Spud Shotgun sprays a fan of hot fries, while the Spudling Gun rapidly fires potatoes but burns through a lot of ammo. The Scrap Spud Gun is the cheapest launcher to make early on, and the Fire Launcher lobs fireballs in an arc.

The Clay Gun is the odd one out among the combat tools. Instead of shooting at enemies, it lets you build with clay, expanding what you can shape into your creations.

Materials you need to stock

Most tool recipes draw from the same short list of crafting materials, so it helps to keep a supply ready before you sit down at the Craftbot.

  • Metal Block Level 1 and Metal Block Level 2
  • Scrap Metal Block
  • Component Kit
  • Circuit Board
  • Cable Roll

Note: The larger weapons ask for fifty Metal Blocks plus multiple Component Kits each, so batch your metal and kit production ahead of time rather than crafting a tool piece by piece.

Once a recipe’s materials are met, the tool appears in your inventory with its yellow dot after the Craftbot finishes the queue. With the full set in hand, you can weld and wire together everything from simple carts to complex flying machines, then use the potato and fire weapons to hold your ground against the threats roaming the open world.
