Norbert in Shift at Midnight: What He Does and How to Handle Him

The gnome fails every doppelganger test on purpose, and how you treat him decides whether your run stays calm or turns chaotic.

The gnome fails every doppelganger test on purpose, and how you treat him decides whether your run stays calm or turns chaotic.

Norbert is the small gnome in striped pajamas who walks up to your counter in Shift at Midnight and immediately breaks every rule you have learned about spotting fakes. He carries a valid-looking ID that returns nothing in the database, he stands behind the register as if he works there, and he ignores your questions. Every instinct says shoot him. That is exactly the trap.

Quick answer: Norbert is a chaos character, not a normal doppelganger. Complete his purchase and let him leave the first time you meet him if you want the True Ending. Harming him does not summon an Entity at the end of your shift. Instead it makes him return on later nights in new forms to sabotage your store.

Why Norbert fails every doppelganger check

Norbert appears in both Story Mode and Endless Mode, and he shows up looking like the most obvious doppelganger you will ever serve. He introduces himself strangely, positions himself behind the counter, refuses to answer questions, and does not appear on the NET Database even though his ID looks legitimate. If you scan that ID, the game flags it as fake.

Norbert presents a valid-looking ID that returns no database match.

The catch is that Norbert is not one of the five monster types. Killing a real doppelganger sends an Entity after you once you lock up. Killing Norbert does not. He is a scripted troublemaker, and harming him triggers a chain of unpredictable events rather than a single hunt. Shift at Midnight is available on Steam and Xbox if you want to test this yourself.

Sparing Norbert the first time

When Norbert first walks in, treat him like a paying customer. Ring up the items he wants, and he will actually hand you money before leaving. Spare him this first time and he tends to move on without bothering you again.

This restraint matters if you are chasing the True Ending. Letting Norbert go on his first visit is the path that helps your run rather than hurting it, and it does not backfire by bringing him back as something that tries to kill you. Enjoy his little run to the counter and send him on his way.

What happens if you harm or kill Norbert

Shoot Norbert, poison him, or provoke him in any way and you force his hand. He becomes a recurring nuisance who returns on later shifts specifically to wreck your store’s reputation, cut your bonuses, or harm you directly. He may even try to make you shoot innocent customers. There are no run-ending consequences from these visits, but they add real friction.

Here are the forms he comes back in and how each one plays out.

Return formWhat he doesHow to handle it
Lemonade standOffers poisoned lemonade that lowers your health and causes a visual effect if you drink itDo not drink it; shoot him instead
Motorcycle riderRides through the store to cause chaosShoot him before he does damage
Disguised as a girlBlends in as a normal customerScan the body to reveal Norbert inside, then shoot

Note: On some playthroughs the lemonade encounter has locked players in place at the stand with no yes-or-no option, a bug the developers have acknowledged and are working on. If it happens, it is a known issue rather than an intended trap.

How to spot Norbert when he is disguised

Once you have provoked him, Norbert can return hidden inside another customer, such as a female shopper. The reliable way to confirm it is the Anomaly Lens or scanner. Looking through it reveals the gnome hiding inside the disguise, at which point you can deal with him directly.

After the first spare, every later appearance can simply be shot on sight, because none of them escalate into a game-changing monster attack. The choice comes down to how you want your run to feel. Kill Norbert for a steady stream of unpredictable chaos, which is why many streamers do it on purpose, or leave him alone on that first visit for a quieter store and the cleanest route to the True Ending.
