The Outlast Trials: How to Unlock the Secret Room in Despoil the Auction

Everything you need to open the hidden Cranks room and claim the Golden Showers outfit in the Resort trial.

Hidden inside the Resort’s Despoil the Auction Trial is a secret room that holds the Golden Showers outfit for your Reagent. Reaching it means pulling a concealed lever, smashing six specific paintings to read hidden numbers, and then pulling the matching numbered switches deep in the basement. The numbers change every run, so there is no single fixed code to memorize.

Quick answer: Pull the “Pain is Pleasure” lever inside the upstairs Bear Room, then find and knock down the six paintings of blindfolded women, using the Portable Blacklight to read the number behind each one. Pull the six matching numbered switches in the Cranks room next to the sixth painting to open the bookshelf and unlock the Golden Showers outfit.

What you need before starting

This challenge only opens up late in the Trial, so treat it as a task you finish once most of the map is already accessible. The easiest window is after you have paid off the auction funds and reached the “Destroy the Lot” objective, since by then you should hold the animal keys you need to reach every painting.

  • The Bear Key, which is obtained later in the Trial and is required to open several rooms.
  • The Wolf Key and Owl Key as well. Carrying all of your keys cuts down travel time significantly.
  • A Portable Blacklight, handed to you earlier in the Trial, used to reveal the hidden numbers.
  • A Brick or Bottle to throw at each painting so it drops off the wall.

Tip: Playing on Introductory difficulty is the safest option, since Sister Liliya deals less damage there. Even so, a Grunt, a Heavy Grunt, and a Pusher can still be present while you search.

Open the secret room with the “Pain is Pleasure” lever

Once you have the Bear Key, return to the beginning of the Trial where the Live Auction room sits. Take the stairs up to the upper level.
Directly opposite the Owl Room is a locked Bear Room that you can now open with the Bear Key. Go inside and look to your left for a switch on the wall, marked with the bloody message “Pain is Pleasure.”
Pull the switch. This activates the hidden room down in the Cranks (the basement). Do not head down there yet, because you still need the six numbers before the puzzle can be solved.

Find and smash the six paintings

Every painting you need shows a blindfolded woman. The method is the same at each spot. Throw your Brick or Bottle to knock the painting off the wall, then shine the Portable Blacklight on the empty space behind it to reveal a number written in invisible ink. Write each number down as you go. Remember, the numbers are randomized for every Trial, so yours will differ from anyone else’s.

Some of these rooms sit in the freezing outdoor sections, so keep your Warmth meter in mind and use Heaters powered by Faulty Generators when the cold starts draining you.

Enter the code in the Cranks room

The sixth painting shares a room with the puzzle itself. Inside the Cranks, this room contains 12 switches, each labeled with a number from 1 to 12. Your job is to pull only the six switches that match the six numbers you collected.

Line up your six numbers so you can see them clearly. Sorting them from lowest to highest makes it easier to check them off. For example, digits of 8, 9, 1, 7, 6, and 12 become 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12.
Pull each switch that carries one of your six numbers, and leave the rest untouched. Because every switch is labeled, matching the correct six is what counts.
When all six correct switches are pulled, they turn green and the bookshelf slides away to reveal the hidden outfit.

How to confirm the Golden Showers outfit unlocked

Solving the switches completes the Hit Me Baby Classified Task, which appears under the Genesis tab. You do not have to finish the rest of the Trial after this. Whether you complete the run or leave, the outfit is already secured. Redeem it from the Sleep Room, where you can then equip your new Golden Showers cosmetic.

If the switches will not turn green, the usual cause is a wrong number in your sequence or a painting you missed. Recheck every painting with the Blacklight, since a misread digit or an extra switch pulled by mistake will stop the bookshelf from opening.
