The opening cinematic for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is essentially a playable short film. It runs through the game’s prologue and its first mission, setting up who you are, why the Federation of Central Usea is losing, and how you end up carrying the name of a fallen hero. It also ends with the launch date and pre-order details.
Quick answer: The cinematic plays out the prologue, “Wings of Theve.” Your rescued pilot flies with ace Jan “Rex” Cope, survives an ambush that kills him, then is ordered to secretly assume his callsign.
The war behind Ace Combat 8’s opening
The story returns to Strangereal, the long-running fictional world of the series. In July 2029, the Republic of Sotoa launches a lightning invasion of the Federation of Central Usea (FCU) and seizes its capital, Theve. Most of the country is occupied, and the FCU navy is shattered.
What survives is the aging aircraft carrier CV-15 Endurance, pulled back far from the front lines with its decks packed with refugees. Because the mainland has fallen, carriers like the Endurance are the FCU’s only remaining launch platforms. That desperate position is the backdrop for everything the cinematic shows.

On October 31, 2029, the opening cinematic shows rough seas in the Straits of Adea. After a helicopter goes down, a survivor and Major Jenkins—an Air Force maintenance officer—float in a yellow life raft. As they wait for help, Jenkins does most of the talking.

A search-and-rescue helicopter arrives and lifts both survivors from the raft. They are flown to the FCU fleet and land on the deck of the Endurance, where Executive Officer Jessica Pike meets them, runs a quick medical check, and hands over a flight helmet.

The prologue proper is titled “Wings of Theve.” On the deck, a suit-wearing media operative known as D.D. explains that the “Wings of Theve” ace is a propaganda symbol, a hero built to keep the nation’s morale alive.

You then meet the man behind the legend. Pilot Jan “Rex” Cope greets the player and admits his fame is mostly media hype. The two board an FAS-030 two-seat fighter marked with number 203 and a red feathered-wing emblem, with the player in the rear seat as flight officer.
Before launch, there is a comms check. Cope and the carrier air boss confirm the rear-seat audio through a simple yes-or-no prompt.

The fighter is then catapulted off the deck and climbs above the fleet, joining wingman Coster in Joker 4 for a routine flight.

From the carrier’s combat direction center, XO Pike vectors Joker Flight toward an unidentified contact, giving a bearing of 010 degrees and a range of 9.7 miles. The contact turns out to be Air Axiom Flight 365, a civilian airliner evacuating refugees, and the flight moves in to escort it.

The escort is ambushed by stealth aircraft led by “Shadow 22.” Joker 4 is sent to pull the airliner clear while Cope engages. During the chase, Cope slaloms through the supports of a suspension bridge and the player deploys chaff and flares, which sends one pursuer crashing into the structure. Shadow 22 recovers and lands a point-blank missile hit that downs Cope’s jet.
The fighter, engulfed in flames, drops into the sea. Underwater, Cope pulls the player clear of the wreckage, then sinks into darkness. The player breaks the surface and is lifted into the rescue helicopter operated by the Coast Guard, closing the first mission, “Jokers Wild.”
Key characters in the opening cinematic
| Character | Role in the prologue |
|---|---|
| Jan “Rex” Cope | The FCU ace publicly known as the “Wings of Theve”; flies the FAS-030 and dies in the ambush. |
| Player character | A rescued pilot serving as Cope’s rear-seat flight officer. |
| XO Jessica Pike | Executive officer of the Endurance who directs the flight and issues later orders. |
| Major Jenkins | Air Force maintenance officer rescued alongside the player. |
| D.D. | Media operative who built and manages the “Wings of Theve” persona. |
| Shadow 22 | Enemy stealth ace who downs Cope’s jet during the escort. |
The twist: becoming Rex
Back in the carrier’s sickbay, a medical officer confirms the player’s cognitive functions are clear, and XO Pike delivers the mission’s real hook. Cope’s death is classified Top Secret, and the FCU cannot afford to lose its symbol of hope while the war hangs in the balance.
D.D. enters the infirmary and hands the player Cope’s iconic helmet and callsign. From here, you secretly take over as “Rex,” the new “Wings of Theve,” leading Joker Flight in Cope’s place. That inherited identity is the emotional core the campaign is built around, alongside squadmates Baxter, Tasha, and Coster.
