AION 2: How to Upgrade Essence Extraction to Professional (Splendent Ruby)

Hit Novice Lv. 50, pull one Splendent Ruby from any Ruby node, and hand it to your faction's artisan to lift the gathering cap.

Essence Extraction is the single gathering skill in AION 2, and it stalls hard at Novice Lv. 50. The progress bar reads Max, no new skill points arrive, and the sub-skills refuse to climb further. The promotion trial that lifts that ceiling is [Upgrade] Essence Extraction Specialty Skill, a short crafting quest that turns Novice into Professional and reopens progression up to Level 100.

Quick answer: Get Essence Extraction to Novice Lv. 50, then speak with Korius (Elyos, Verteron) or Alzirr (Asmodian, Altgard). Extract a Splendent Ruby (Bound) at any Ruby node and deliver it to the NPC.

Reach Essence Extraction Novice Lv. 50 first

The promotion only becomes available once your gathering skill hits its Novice ceiling. Essence Extraction levels on its own every time you pull from a node, separate from your character level. Ore, gems, logs, herbs, cooking ingredients, and Odyle all feed the same progress bar, so collecting materials while you travel to quests builds the skill quickly.

Spend incoming Common Skill Points on Proficient Handling first, Delicate Touch next, and Lady Luck last. These upgrades improve your odds at all node types and lower the chance of outright failure. Once Novice Lv. 50 is attained, the quest is added to your tracker automatically.

Use the main menu to open Essence Extraction and verify that it shows Novice Lv. 50 and the Max marker. Although the quest recommends character level 45, your character’s level does not affect acceptance or completion. The gathering skill is the only requirement.

Unlock the first Seeker skill for gems in the Essence Extraction menu. Nearby Ruby nodes then show on your minimap, which makes the next step far faster.

Talk to your faction’s Artisan Essence Extractor

Your faction decides which artisan starts the test. Both NPCs run the identical trial, so follow the entry for your side.

For Elyos, look for Korius beneath a turquoise quest icon at the Dawn Legion Base. Follow the route near Western Cantas Valley, using the Verteron map to orient yourself. Talk to him to begin the Specialty Upgrade Test.

Korius describes a skill test: extract essence from a Ruby without harming it, then present a Splendent Ruby as proof. Asmodians receive the same task from Alzirr.

Extract a Splendent Ruby from any Ruby node

You need just one Splendent Ruby (Bound). No crafting or special deposit is involved: the item can randomly appear when you extract from a normal Ruby node, so keep gathering Rubies until it does. A standard attempt usually yields a Ruby Gemstone, with the Splendent variety as an uncommon extra.

Do not confuse the Splendent Ruby with the Radiant Ruby Gemstone. Jewelcrafting uses the Radiant grade, made by converting Radiant Odyle, and it will not count for this test.

How extraction works

Ruby nodes appear as large orange-red crystals jutting out of cliffs. Move close enough for the F Gather prompt to show, then press F to begin extracting. Two meters track success and failure throughout the attempt; fill the success gauge before the failure one to receive the material. If the odds look poor, allow the attempt to finish instead of cancelling: stopping it can cost you the attempt with no reward, whereas a completed failure still grants gathering experience.

A node has several durability segments and supports two to four gathering attempts before running out. Since every player shares nodes, you may find one depleted when you get there. It returns at that location after a few minutes.

Ruby node locations in Verteron (Elyos)

There are 196 Ruby spots in Verteron. The densest group is near the Verteron Fortress Ruins by Pilgrim’s Ridge, southeast of the Dawn Legion Base. Other Ruby locations include Ellun River Midstream, the Destroyed Abyss Gate, and the Kraka Footpath. Some deposits are perched on ledges amid hostile mobs; glide or fly to them to avoid aggro. Each deposit has a minimum gathering level, listed below.

#Where it sitsGathering level
1On the cliff north of Pilgrim’s Ridge, beside the Fortress RuinsNovice Lv. 50
2In a tight cliff gap above the canyon, east of the fortressNovice Lv. 25
3On the rocky shelf just outside the Fortress Jail EntranceNovice Lv. 31
4Stone shelf beneath the broken bridge in the ruinsNovice Lv. 32
5On a stone column at the center of the ruins’ courtyardNovice Lv. 33
6Outer rock spine south toward Krall CaveNovice Lv. 34

Since you start this trial at Novice Lv. 50, every node above is within reach. Any of them can roll the gem, so cycle through the cluster rather than waiting on a single deposit.

Ruby node locations in Altgard (Asmodian)

Altgard holds 190 Ruby spots, spread across the Dredgion Crash Site, Calderon Canyon, Tranein Highland, Silent Hill, and the Nameless Cemetery. Calderon Canyon is the most reliable farm, with glowing red nodes set into the rocky walls.

Turn in the Splendent Ruby and confirm the upgrade

Once the gem is in your inventory, go back to the NPC who assigned the test. From the Verteron cliffs, glide down and use fast travel to reach the Dawn Legion Base directly.

Hand over the Splendent Ruby to close the Specialty Upgrade Test. Korius signs it off with the line, “You are an Essence Extraction Professional now,” and the completion panel shows your two rewards.

Open the Essence Extraction screen again to check your progress: it should now show Professional Lv. 1 instead of the Novice limit. The skill can then continue gaining levels, Common and Specialty Skill Points begin accruing again, and your extraction branches can advance beyond their former Novice caps toward Level 100.

The upgrade item raises the cap. The Artwork, meanwhile, is a decorative object that you place in your Pantheon to receive its stat bonus. Since both items are character-bound, use them instead of trying to sell them.

Ruby materials reference

Ruby gathering on your way to the Splendent gem is still useful: regular deposits can yield four gemstone grades. At Novice grade with gathering mastery 1, each comes from a Gem node and grants one gemstone per pull; Poko’s Skin Bundle (Bound) may also drop as bonus material.

GemstonePer gatherMasteryBonus

Fine Ruby Gemstone11Poko’s Skin Bundle (Bound)
Pure Ruby Gemstone11Poko’s Skin Bundle (Bound)
Radiant Ruby Gemstone11Poko’s Skin Bundle (Bound)

Both the Splendent Ruby and Ruby Gemstone are Common items, though their properties differ. The Splendent Ruby is bound, untradeable, level 1, has no sell price, and stacks up to 1,000. The Ruby Gemstone is tradeable, requires level 15, and sells for 5 Kina. Dragon Lord necklace recipes use Radiant Ruby Gemstones, which belong to Jewelcrafting rather than this test.
