Twining is the mechanic that lets you stop directing an Aniimo from the outside and instead become it, taking full control of its movement and skills in both exploration and combat. It unlocks early, during the prologue in Idyll, and it stays central to how you fight, traverse, and solve puzzles for the rest of the game.
Quick answer: Press RT on Xbox Series X|S, R2 on PS5, or the C key on PC to Twine into your active Aniimo. Press the same input again to Untwine.

Twine controls by platform
Twining uses a single toggle. Select the Aniimo you want to become, press the button, and you switch from controlling the Pathfinder to controlling the creature directly. Pressing it again reverses the swap.
| Platform | Twine / Untwine input |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | RT |
| PS5 | R2 |
| PC (keyboard) | C |
You know it worked when control shifts to the creature. Instead of guiding a companion, you are now moving, attacking, and dodging as that Aniimo. Toggling the input returns you to the Pathfinder.

Aniimo runs two combat modes. In Command mode, the AI handles your creature while you direct it. Twine is the second mode, and it hands you direct, real-time control of the Aniimo instead.
That control changes what you can do under pressure. You chain attack combos on your own timing, and you dodge incoming hits yourself rather than trusting the AI to react. The result is a more precise fight where your creature takes less avoidable damage.
Because you can swap which Aniimo you are Twined with on the fly, your party works as a rotating kit rather than one fighter with backups. Mid-battle swapping lets you line up the right element and role for each moment.
Enter a Twine with a plan and an exit in mind. It is a mode to switch into for a specific job, such as dodging a burst of pressure or opening a break window, not a button to hold constantly.

Using Twining to explore Idyll
Outside of combat, Twining is the traversal system. There is no separate mount or vehicle in Aniimo, so you move through the world using whichever creature you become. Each Aniimo carries its own Mobility trait, and that trait decides how you get around.
- Climb, fly, or swim across terrain depending on the Aniimo in your loadout.
- Use elemental attacks to interact with the environment, such as burning away thorns that block a path with a fire attack.
- Reach new areas by picking a companion whose movement, like sprinting or burrowing, solves the obstacle in front of you.
The mobility you get is tied to who you Twine with. As examples, Emberpup’s trait speeds up movement, while Budclaw can tunnel underground. Before an outing, think about the effect you need, height, speed, or a specific ability, then bring an Aniimo that provides it.

Twining in puzzles and side missions
Twining is also a key that opens content nothing else can. Some puzzles and side missions require you to be in the same form as another creature, since you can only talk to specific Aniimo by Twining into that species yourself.
Combined with elemental interactions and movement traits, this makes the mechanic your main tool for progression rather than a combat-only feature. If a route is locked or an Aniimo will not respond, the answer is usually to Twine into the right creature and try again.
Aniimo is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and smartphones through Android and iOS, and Twining works the same way across all of them once you reach the prologue that introduces it.
