The Hazmat Team shift turns Animal Hospital green. Slime spreads across every surface, a thick fog slows you down, and a roaming monster called Slimebert starts eating anyone in its path while Animal Corporation’s cleanup crew works. It is one of the longest special shifts in the game, and the fastest way out is to keep checking patients in rather than fighting the monster.
Quick answer: The shift can begin on any round between Shift 11 and Shift 17. When the “The air feels slimy” warning appears in green, stun Slimebert with a Fire Extinguisher only when it blocks you, and treat all patients to end the round.

When the Hazmat Team shift triggers in Animal Hospital
The shift arrives at some point between Shift 11 and Shift 17. Most runs see it around Shift 15, but the exact number changes from run to run, so treat any specific round as a rough window rather than a fixed trigger. It appears in every run within that range, and there is no known way to skip it or force it onto a particular shift.
The warning is easy to spot. A green message reading “The air feels slimy” flashes at the top of the screen, then a yellow Animal Corporation vehicle appears outside and Dr. Harlow walks out to meet the crew at the entrance. Two hazmat workers pour into the building and begin vacuuming the slime with their equipment. If you watch the exchange, Harlow tells them to use the back door next time before heading back inside.
Once the crew is inside, the contamination spreads fast. Slime covers floors, walls, tables, and even patient beds. It does not damage players or NPCs, but it slows your movement, which makes it harder to shuttle between the desk and the wards. The shift lasts a single round, so your only job is to finish it before Slimebert gets out of hand.

Shortly after the crew arrives, a new anomaly named Slimebert checks in as a patient. It is a large goo monster that drips slime as it wanders the hallways. It moves slowly and ignores the hazmat workers, but it will devour any player or patient that ends up in front of it.

Being eaten does not end your run. Slimebert puts you in its mouth, chews for a few seconds, then spits you back onto the floor. The real cost is time and sanity. Each grab drains your Sanity Bar for a “Digested” reason, and you can lose around 15 to 20 points per hit, which is dangerous in a round that is already chaotic.
How to counter Slimebert with the Fire Extinguisher
The Fire Extinguisher is the only tool that works on Slimebert. It cannot kill the monster, but it stuns it long enough for you to slip past and keep working.
Tip: Treat the extinguisher as a defensive tool, not a weapon. Every second spent hunting Slimebert is a second not spent clearing your patient list, and the round only ends when that list is empty.
The Firefighter class and why it helps
The Firefighter class was added alongside this shift and is built for it. It costs 1,100 Animal Coins, leans on Utility and Sanity stats, and starts every run with a special Fire Extinguisher plus an extra inventory slot. Its extinguisher recharges on its own in your inventory instead of needing a refill station, so you never run dry against Slimebert.
| Level | Perk |
|---|---|
| 1 | Starts with a special Fire Extinguisher and +1 max inventory slot |
| 2 | Recovers 1 Sanity when putting out fires |
| 3 | Full immunity to Sanity drain from fires and +10 bonus Sanity |
You do not need the Firefighter to survive the shift. Any class can clear it as long as you keep a Fire Extinguisher on hand and use it when Slimebert closes in. The class simply removes the refill problem and shields you from fire hazards, which matters more in longer, higher-shift runs.
Clearing the shift and what comes after
The win condition never changes. Check in and treat every patient before the shift timer runs out, spraying Slimebert only when it stands between you and your next task. Because the monster grows more aggressive the longer the round drags on, speed is your best defense. Rushing your earlier shifts so you reach this event with a full inventory also gives you a stronger start.
You will know the shift is over once the crew finishes vacuuming and the slime clears. A new hazmat-suited NPC named Sam then arrives, introduces himself, and offers to handle any future slime contamination in the hospital. That hand-off is your signal that the round is done and normal shifts resume.
