The Mad Scientist in Skylands hands out one of the First Sea’s oldest hidden tasks, and it stalls most players at the same point. He asks for a Lightning Bolt, gives no waypoint, and the item is not sold, dropped by an enemy, or hidden in a chest. It sits inside a single cloud floating somewhere around the Skylands islands, and that cloud only gives itself away with a brief dark grey flicker.

Where to find the Mad Scientist in Skylands
The Mad Scientist is not standing out in the open. He sits at the back of the first, grounded Skylands island, tucked behind one of the two large rocks near the trees. Coming in by boat, dock at the island and turn roughly 90 degrees to your left, then walk around the rocky outcrop until his name tag appears.
He is the same NPC who sells the Electric fighting style for $500,000, so the shop prompt and the secret task share one interaction. Nothing needs to be bought first, and there is no separate level gate on the fetch task itself.
How to get the Lightning Bolt from the flashing cloud
The Lightning Bolt spawns inside one ordinary-looking cloud somewhere among the Skylands islands. Every other cloud is scenery. The one you want pulses dark grey at short intervals, and the flash is often easiest to catch from below, on the underside of the cloud.
Tip: the cloud can sit above, beside, or below the island you are standing on, so check the airspace under the higher islands as well as the open sky around them.
Turning in the Lightning Bolt and confirming it worked
Fly back down to the base island and speak to the Mad Scientist again. His dialogue changes from the fetch request to the hand-in prompt, and the Lightning Bolt objective clears from your quest tracker once you give it to him. That tracker change is the confirmation the secret task is done.
Why the Lightning Bolt hunt fails
- You never accepted the task. Selecting “Walk Away” leaves the quest untaken, and there is no objective in your log to complete.
- You are checking the wrong clouds. Only the cloud with the dark grey flash contains the item; hitting plain clouds does nothing.
- You ran out of energy mid-search. Flight and dash moves stop working when energy drops too low, and the game warns you with a “Low energy!” message.
- The Mad Scientist shows “[Not Enough Money.]” instead of his normal lines. In the First Sea he can glitch this way for players who arrived through a portal.
The whole thing takes a couple of minutes once you know what to look for, and the search is the only real hurdle. Slow down, keep your eyes on the cloud edges rather than the islands, and the dark grey flash will do the rest of the work for you.
