Build Your Backrooms: How the Maze, Monsters, and Rebirth System Work

Build Your Backrooms is a Roblox tycoon experience where you construct a maze from connectable hallway blocks, drop in monsters to catch wandering NPCs and visitors, and reinvest the Cash you earn to grow an ever-larger labyrinth. The core loop is simple to start and rewards steady expansion. Once you understand how the pieces fit together, you can build a maze that runs itself.

Quick answer: Place hallway Buildings so each one connects to at least one other, add a monster to patrol the maze, collect the Cash it generates from caught visitors, clear rubble to expand your base, then trigger a Rebirth once you meet the building, rubble, and Cash thresholds to unlock more monsters and blocks.

The core loop: build, catch, expand, Rebirth

Everything in the game feeds one cycle. You buy maze blocks and place them in your home base, add a monster to hunt visitors, and that monster generates income each time it catches someone. That income funds bigger builds and eventually a Rebirth, which opens up more monsters and new blocks so the next maze can be larger and more profitable.

The four stages below repeat as you progress. Each Rebirth resets your goals higher without taking anything away from you.

Placing hallway Buildings correctly

Buildings are the maze blocks you buy and place inside your home base. Each one is shaped like a specific type of hallway, and the single rule that matters is connection. Every hallway has to link to at least one other hallway or the maze will not function.

Open the Buildings shop and purchase a hallway block. Early on you have a limited selection, but more options unlock at certain Rebirth levels.
Move the block into the build area of your home base. Press R to rotate it so its openings face the piece you want it to join.
Set it down next to an existing hallway so the two connect. Repeat, laying blocks side by side, until you have a rudimentary maze with a path running through it.

You know the layout works when the hallways form a continuous, connected route rather than isolated pieces. That connected path is what lets a monster move through and catch visitors.

How monsters generate Cash

Monsters are what turn your maze into an income source. Each one patrols the hallways and catches NPCs and visitors who get lost inside. In the early game you can place only a single monster on the map, and extra monster slots open up as you complete Rebirths.

Monsters are bought from their own dedicated shop, and many are locked behind specific Rebirth levels. Two numbers decide how much a monster earns for you:

  • Cash multiplier — each monster has its own multiplier that raises the money you earn per caught NPC or visitor.
  • Cooldown — after a catch, the monster waits a few seconds before it can target someone new, and this delay differs between monsters.

When you compare monsters, weigh the higher multiplier against the cooldown. A strong multiplier with a long cooldown may earn less over time than a steadier catcher, depending on how busy your maze gets.

Expanding your base by clearing rubble

Your starting build area is small. To make room for more hallways and give monsters space to roam, you expand the home base using Cash. Walk up to the rubble that sits just beyond your buildable area and interact with it to spend Cash and unlock that ground.

Each cleared section adds usable space, which lets your maze grow more intricate and gives monsters more area to patrol. Clearing rubble also counts toward one of the requirements for triggering a Rebirth, so it does double duty.

Rebirth requirements and rewards

Rebirth is the backbone of long-term progress. Unlike many tycoon games, a Rebirth here does not wipe your maze or set you back. You keep what you have built and receive rewards on top, along with fresh shop items to buy.

To trigger a Rebirth you need to hit three thresholds at once:

  • Place a set number of Buildings.
  • Clear the required amount of rubble from the map.
  • Collect the defined amount of Cash.

Once all three are met, completing the Rebirth grants rewards, unlocks additional monster slots so you can run more than one monster, and makes new Buildings and monsters available in the shops. This is how you move from a single-monster starter maze to a sprawling, high-earning backrooms.

Exploring your maze and other players’ builds

You are not limited to building. You can step inside your own maze or visit another player’s to experience these labyrinths from ground level. When a monster catches you inside a maze, you earn a small amount of money, and the maze’s original creator earns as well.

The payout from being caught is modest, so it is more of a way to sample a miniaturized backrooms run than a serious income method. It is a useful way to see how a well-built maze plays before you refine your own.

Frequently asked questions

How do you unlock more monsters?

Buy them from the dedicated monster shop. Many monsters only become purchasable once you reach specific Rebirth levels, so completing Rebirths is the path to a bigger roster.

Is the game free to play?

Yes. You can play and expand your maze without relying on any premium elements.

Does a Rebirth make you lose progress?

No. You keep your maze and your earnings, and a Rebirth adds rewards, extra monster slots, and new shop items on top.

Once the build-catch-expand-Rebirth rhythm clicks, the game largely runs on its own momentum. Keep hallways connected, match monsters to the traffic your maze draws, and clear rubble ahead of each Rebirth to keep the requirements within reach.
