When you reach the top of the multiplayer rank in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the game asks you to choose how to Prestige. One path takes your gear away and rewards you more for earning it back. The other resets your level and leaves your loadouts alone.
Quick answer: At level 55, pick Classic Prestige for a full reset with gear re-locked and bigger rewards. Pick Prestige to restart at Level 1 and keep your Create-a-Class unlocks.
Modern Warfare 4 Prestige starts at level 55
Multiplayer progression ends at level 55. When you reach the cap, you can remain at 55 or Prestige. Prestige presents two choices, each with different losses and rewards.
| Path | Level | Create-a-Class unlocks | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Prestige | Rank resets | All gear re-locks | Prestige token plus more |
| Prestige | Restart from Level 1 | Kept | Fewer, less exclusive |
Classic Prestige: The full reset
Classic Prestige follows the original format. The official Call of Duty account described it on 21 Aug 2026 as follows:
“Traditional reset experience. Reach level 55 and reset your rank, re-locking all gear to earn again, and granting a prestige token in the process as well as other goodies.”
With this option, your weapons, perks, and equipment are locked again, then unlocked as you progress through the levels. Every Classic Prestige awards a prestige token and other rewards. Call of Duty presents the more demanding choice as worthwhile: “Greater rewards await those who choose the harder path.”
Prestige: Reset the number, keep the classes
The regular Prestige option has a shorter description: “Restart from Level 1, keeping Create-a-class unlocks.”
Your level number drops back to 1. Every weapon, attachment, perk and other Create-a-Class unlock stays usable, so your classes keep working while you climb again. Nothing is taken away, which is why the rewards on this path are fewer and less exclusive than Classic’s.
Which Modern Warfare 4 Prestige path to choose
The choice depends on how you feel about the unlock grind.
- Choose Prestige if you want your favorite loadouts the whole time and mostly see Prestige as a level counter.
- Choose Classic Prestige if you enjoy earning gear from scratch and want the greater prestige rewards.
Classic Prestige brings bigger rewards, not faster leveling. The announcement does not tie either path to a change in XP.
DMZ Prestige is separate from multiplayer
These multiplayer choices leave DMZ unaffected. Its progression uses ranks 1 through 70, while multiplayer ranks run from 1 through 55.

DMZ Prestige applies to one Active Duty operator rather than your entire account. The option reads “AVAILABLE WHEN 18 TRAITS ACQUIRED”, meaning the operator must first have 18 trait points. Prestiging requires rare gear and a large amount of DMZ cash; each time, one trait belonging to that operator becomes permanent. For what you can build and buy between deployments, see the DMZ FOB guide.
