Norgan’s whiteouts chill you the moment you stay out in the storm, and the one stat that fights that chill is thermal value. Thermal equipment reduces the effects of being chilled, and this guide ranks the new gear by that value: all 19 cloaks Dark Arisen adds, then a list (not a complete one) of its head, body, and leg armour with a thermal value and a known way to get it.
Quick answer: The warmest cloak is the Firebird Cloak at thermal 70, the reward of the side quest Quilt Me Down with a Feather. The warmest body piece is the Red Noble Shirt at thermal 50.
What thermal value does in a whiteout
The Whiteouts tutorial spells out the danger on its first page: “Remain outdoors during a whiteout and you become chilled, causing your maximum Stamina to fall steadily.” Its second page lists the ways to push back: “You can reduce the effects of being chilled by donning thermal equipment; temporarily boost your thermal value by consuming meals at camp; or stave off the cold awhile using heatstones, which can be found or crafted.”
There is no stat line labelled “Thermal” on an equipment panel. The thermal value appears as a small snow-and-wind icon with a percentage under “Debilitation Res” at the bottom of the panel. The tutorial shows that same icon reading “+50 %” beside a fur cloak, and Hal’s Workshop panels print it the same way, for example Bloodstained Cloak “+50 %”, Trihorn Pelisse “+30 %”, Smithed Highland Coat “+10 %”, and Smithed Coldmarch Cuisses “+5 %”.
Separate from the gear’s own figure, the special skill Full Thermal, found on some equipment, reads “Thermal value is set to 100.”

Add to Google Preferences →How this ranking works
- “Best” means the highest thermal value. Nothing else decides the order.
- Cloaks share one thermal figure, so ties are broken by Defense first, then by Magick Defense.
- Head, body, and leg armour with the same thermal value are grouped by slot, then listed A to Z. Defense is left out because appraisal can give individual copies different values.
The cloak table covers all 19 cloaks Dark Arisen adds, and every vocation can wear them. The armour table is not a complete list of every piece with a thermal value; it lists the Dark Arisen head, body, and leg pieces that carry one together with a known way to get them. This ranking covers Dark Arisen content. For the chill itself, heatstones and meals, see how to stay warm in Norgan’s whiteouts.
How much a thermal value slows the chill is not stated anywhere in the game, and it does not say whether values from several pieces add up, so treat each piece’s number only as a way to compare pieces.
Cloaks ranked by thermal value
| Thermal value | Cloaks |
|---|---|
| 70 | Firebird Cloak |
| 50 | Mantle of the Arisen-Saint, Profane Cloak, Bloodstained Cloak, Dragonslayer’s Mantle, Tenebrous Stole, Featherdown Blanket, Sovransguard Mantle, Chimeric Cloak, Direwolf Furcloak, Crystalline Shawl, Tarnished Mantle, Winter-Wisp Cape, Arcane Cloak, Phantasmic Shawl, Creusot’s Mantle, Griffin-Feather Cloak |
| 30 | Trihorn Pelisse, Nightshade Pelisse |
Firebird Cloak is the top new cloak, reaching thermal 70 while every other new cloak stays at 50 or below. Its stats are Defense 3 and Magick Defense 0. Completing Quilt Me Down with a Feather awards it, and no other cloak provides more warmth.

| Creusot’s Mantle | 0 | 0 | Lost Rites: Mired Conduit chest |
| Griffin-Feather Cloak | 0 | 0 | Lost Rites: Interminable Corridor chest |
Every one of these matches at thermal 50, so the order above ranks them by Defense and then Magick Defense. By thermal value alone they are tied.
At 7,000 G, the Bloodstained Cloak is the cheapest craftable choice with thermal 50; crafting it takes Barbarian Armor Fragment x4 and Rectrix x1. Hal starts carrying it with Hammer and Tongs. The Direwolf Furcloak is available that early as well, for 15,000 G and Direwolf Pelt x10. For warmth alongside defense, the Mantle of the Arisen-Saint costs 50,000 G and provides 15 Defense plus 15 Magick Defense, while the Profane Cloak costs 30,000 G and provides 15 Defense.

The Mantle of the Arisen-Saint, Tarnished Mantle, and Nightshade Pelisse appear in Hal’s list after Village Defense as “???” rows, with their materials and cost shown. Every Hal recipe is listed in every Hal recipe, gold and materials, and the “???” rows are explained in how to unlock more Hal recipes. Hal’s panel also displays your own Defense with the piece equipped, so those figures read higher than the cloak’s own values listed here.

The thermal 30 cloaks
The two coldest new cloaks are the Trihorn Pelisse (Defense 5, Magick Defense 5, Hal’s Workshop at 33,000 G with Midnight-Black Tatter x2 and Baleful Hoof x1) and the Nightshade Pelisse (Magick Defense 10, Hal’s Workshop at 35,000 G). Both read thermal 30, lower than every cloak in the 50 group.

Head, body, and leg armour ranked by thermal value
Head, body, and leg armour can carry a thermal value too. This is not a complete list of every piece with a thermal value, but it covers the Dark Arisen head, body, and leg pieces that have one and a known way to get them.
Thermal 50 and 20: the warmest pieces
| Piece | Slot | Thermal | How to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Noble Shirt | Body | 50 | Bay Wayside Shrine (15 Wyrmslife Crystal) |
| Wintertide Parka | Head | 20 | Appraise Spoils: Lv 3, Ancient Helm |
| Stormproof Boots | Legs | 20 | Appraise Spoils: Lv 3, Ancient Greaves |
Every vocation can wear all three pieces. At thermal 50, the Red Noble Shirt is the top body option; buy it at Bay Wayside Shrine for 15 Wyrmslife Crystal. The best head and leg choices are the Wintertide Parka and Stormproof Boots, respectively, each at thermal 20 and obtained by appraising its corresponding Ancient spoils.

| Whitesilk Breeches | Legs | Archer, Mage, Sorcerer, Magick Archer | Appraise Spoils: Lv 2, Greaves or Ancient Greaves |
Only one head piece sits at thermal 10, the Coroin Seaca. Other pieces here are body or leg armour. The smithed body and leg pieces in this table appear in Hal’s first list after Hammer and Tongs. If you would rather build than appraise, the smithed body pieces (Smithed Norgandian Tunic, Smithed Raider’s Tunic, Smithed Highland Coat, Smithed Snowraven Vest, Smithed Indigo Coat) and smithed leg pieces (Smithed Skirmisher’s Breeches, Smithed Cragsman’s Boots, Smithed Whitesilk Breeches) give thermal 10 in those slots.

Thermal 5 pieces
| Piece | Slot | Who can wear it | How to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oathtaker’s Hood | Head | All nine vocations | Appraise Spoils: Lv 3, Helm or Ancient Helm |
| Smithed Oathtaker’s Hood | Head | All nine vocations | Hal’s Workshop, 10,000 G |
| Smithed Thermal Bevor | Head | All nine vocations | Hal’s Workshop, 10,000 G |

| Smithed Coldmarch Cuisses | Legs | Fighter, Archer, Warrior, Mystic Spearhand | Hal’s Workshop, 12,000 G |
These are the lowest thermal values on this list. The Oathtaker’s Hood and Thermal Bevor, along with their smithed versions, are available to all nine vocations.

For the highest thermal value in each slot, pair the Firebird Cloak with the Red Noble Shirt on the body, and fill the head and legs with the Wintertide Parka and Stormproof Boots. Below the Firebird Cloak, the highest cloak value is 50, and the Bloodstained Cloak at 7,000 G is the cheapest cloak with it at Hal’s Workshop.
