Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is a single-player story built from 16 linear missions. It moves between Private Park’s war on the Korean Peninsula and Captain Price’s solo operations. Digital pre-order owners have been able to play since October 16, and the full game launches on October 23. On a first run, it takes most players a full day of gaming, give or take.

Quick answer: A standard first playthrough of all 16 missions takes about 8–9 hours. Rushing on a low difficulty takes about 7–8 hours. Getting every campaign trophy takes roughly 14–18 hours across at least two runs.

Modern Warfare 4 campaign length by playstyle

Modern Warfare 4 runs a bit longer than recent Call of Duty campaigns, which have usually landed in the five-to-six-hour range. Your total depends on difficulty, how much you explore, and whether you watch the cutscenes.

PlaystyleEstimated time
Rush, lower difficulty7–8 hours
Standard first run8–9 hours
Higher difficultyLonger than 9 hours
All 18 campaign trophies14–18 hours

Skipping cutscenes cuts about an hour from a full run. You also lose most of the story, so that approach makes the most sense on a repeat playthrough rather than your first.

The open-ended mission, Stranded, accounts for much of the difference between runs. If you fast-travel and go straight for its three main objectives, you can clear it in 20–30 minutes. It also has a cabin base camp, 26 yellow supply caches, keypad-locked doors, collectible notes, and craftable gear upgrades. If you chase all of that, Stranded alone can take several hours.

All 16 Modern Warfare 4 missions and rewards

You play the missions in a fixed order. Every mission you finish unlocks one reward for use outside the campaign. Eight of those rewards are Operators, and the rest are cosmetics or XP tokens. You can replay any mission you’ve already completed.

Mission 11 sometimes appears as “Defection” instead of “Deflection.” Either way, it is the eleventh mission and it awards a Double Weapon XP Token. Following Orders includes a decision point where you either refuse orders or execute a defector. It also contains a toolbox with a code lock.

You can confirm a reward unlocked by finding it in the game’s menus once the mission ends. Operators appear in your Operator selection, and calling cards, emblems, and loading screens appear with your other cosmetics.

Difficulty settings and the second playthrough

Your first run can use any of the four standard difficulties. You can change difficulty at any time from the pause menu.

  • Recruit: the most forgiving setting and the fastest way to see the story.
  • Regular: the default balance, which matches the 8–9 hour estimate.
  • Hardened: tougher enemies and less margin for mistakes.
  • Veteran: the hardest standard option, with more checkpoint restarts and longer total time.

Realism difficulty is locked until you finish the campaign once, and one of the 18 campaign trophies requires a Realism clear. That makes a full trophy run at least two playthroughs. YOLO difficulty adds another tier for players who want an extra challenge after that.

The campaign is single-player only. You fight alongside AI squadmates in most missions, but there is no co-op mode, so you can’t split the time with a friend.

To unlock the campaign Operators quickly, a standard-difficulty run of all 16 missions is the efficient route. Save Stranded’s caches, the trophy list, and Realism for later.
